SPICENTICE

Eating is one of the very first activities in the life of humans. It does not require being taught or any formal education – you just place the child to suckle and boom, feeding takes place. As universal as eating is, it is subject to cultural influences, availability of food products and methods of preparation. Indeed, some food crops are regional in their availability while others are seasonal. But one thing that seems to be universal is the use of spices across the world. Of course, the choice of herbs and spices depends on the available ones, but the place of herbs and spices in food preparation seems to be set in stone. Although in today’s world, you can walk into any store to get any product from any part of the world, it was not always so. Spices were so important that they served as currency among countries once upon a time, loved and sought after for their preservative qualities as well as the health benefits. Over time, specific areas of the world had their preferred spice, examples being Indians and curry, the Eastern world is known for their cinnamon, ginger, turmeric, pepper and cardamom and the Mediterranean for their Thyme, saffron, cumin and paprika, among others. These are just examples and are by no means the total list of spices available in these areas. Migration has caused a lot of people to lose touch with their cultures, and one of the ways to keep tab is to eat food that reminds us of ‘home’. Also, more people are becoming open to the idea of cuisine tourism, where they learn about and eat foods from different parts of the world. SPICENTICE is a company that claims to specialize in the production and retail of different spices from different parts of the world.
