WaterAid

Aspiring to make a change in the world? Wanting to fight for human rights? Water is a human right, and WaterAid is committed to tackling the water crisis and bringing clean water to everyone. What does this charity do and is it worth your donation?

About WaterAid
While we take tap water and decent toilets for granted, millions of people still lack access to safe water and proper sanitation and hygiene. Specifically, 650 million people do not have access to clean water and one in three people lack a proper toilet.

WaterAid is a charity founded in the United Kingdom in the 1980s. Established by the UK water industry, its first president was none other than Prince Charles. The non-profit organization is active in Southern, East and West Africa. Teams are in place in the following countries:

East Africa:

  • Ethiopia
  • Kenya
  • Rwanda
  • Tanzania
  • Uganda

Southern Africa:

  • Lesotho
  • Madagascar
  • Malawi
  • Mozambique
  • South Africa
  • Swaziland
  • Zambia

West Africa:

  • Burkina Fasa
  • Ghana
  • Liberia
  • Mali
  • Niger
  • Nigeria
  • Senegal
  • Sierra Leone

The NGO is also active in India, where millions of people still do not have access to clean water or a toilet.

The charity benefits from corporate partnerships, NGOs, civil society groups, colleges and universities and government institutions. Their donations facilitate the employment of over a thousand people in many different countries. But not only monetary contributions are made. Many people have volunteered for WaterAid, overseas or at events such as Glastonbury.

The charity promises the get the most out of your donation, and to respect your privacy. Clean water is a basic necessity, and the lack of it leaves communities unable to get ahead. In countries where many children die young, where the majority of the population lives in poverty, and where growing food is a serious challenge, WaterAid’s help is essential to securing development and to meeting global goals.

Services
The charity is ambitious. It is committed to bringing safe and clean water to all by 2030. Many technologies are employed to achieve this goal, including hand-dug wells, handpumps, gravity-fed schemes and rainwater harvesting. The charity also invests in community-managed latrines, urban pit waste management and waste water treatment to achieve decent sanitation in underprivileged places.

Complaints, concerns, questions and experiences
The charity has an FAQ-section on their website that addresses many concerns. For example, why people in third world countries cannot simply dig their own wells, whether not all the aid is lost to corruption, whether the charity is a religious organization and whether the problem is simply population growth. The section even discloses the salary of its CEO.

For other enquiries, you can fill out a form on the charity’s website. The form asks for your general contact information such as your addresss and phone number. You can also write the organization by sending a letter to the following address:
WaterAid 47 – 49 Durham Street London SE11 5JD United Kingdom

Lastly, it is also possible to e-mail the organization (supportarcare@wateraid.org) or to visit its ofice in London.
