The brand East started off as a small, independent London boutique, opening in 1994 hoping to design and sell women’s clothing and accessories inspired by Eastern styles and themes, with the vision of designing clothing that allows and encourages peope to be indivudal. Early collections were produced in Jaipur, India, and they have maintained a substantial connection to India, with the fairtrade, clothing retail company Fabindia, buying a controlling share of East in 2012. Fabindia promotes quality, hand-woven fabric, as well as nurturing links between India’s urban centres and the skilled craftmanship of the rural countryside (known as Bharat). This suited the ideals of East very well, and linked them with 80,000 crafts people and artisan talent.
