Frugi started out life as a company called Cut4Cloth, opened in 2004 by parents that wanted to use cloth nappies for their child but struggled finding clothing that would fit over the nappy. So they set up a company specialised in clothing specifically designed for fitting over cloth nappies used by babies. After the initial success of the baby clothing, they decided in 2006 to expand their range to include kids clothing and a breastfeeding range for mothers, and finally rebranded in 2008 to Frugi, meaning fruit of the earth in Latin. They have since moved their office to an organic farm and extended their clothing range for kids up to 10 years old. Frugi has also won a range of awards for their clothing, including the Queen’s Award for Enterprise, for International Trade, the Made for Mum’s Award, and the Junior Design Award. As a company they emphasise the importance of their ethical and organic productions, using organically sources cotton for the clothing which is guaranteed by the Soil Association charity, and the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). They also donate 1% of their yearly turnover to charities, this year supporting Kicks Count, focusing on educating mothers, Cornwall Wildlife Trust and an orphanage in India.
Here is a video explaining how to use cloth diapers, and why they are good for the environment, which is the reason Frugi first started up.
Since branching out from baby clothing to fit cotton nappies, Frugi now offer a full range of clothing, accessories and toys for babies and toddlers, kids up to 10 years, mothers, as well as bedding, most often decorated with the company’s playful and colourful patterns.
