The history of watches dates back to 16th century Europe, where watches began to evolve, based on 15th-century portable spring-driven clocks. The watch which developed from the 16th century to the mid 20th century was a mechanical device, powered by winding a mainspring that turned gears and then caused movements that kept time via a rotating balance wheel. One account of the origin of the word "watch" traces its origin from the Old English word woecce which means "watchman" because it was used by town watchmen to keep track of their duty shifts. Another account claims that it came from 17th-century sailors, who used the new instruments to time the length of their shipboard watches or duty shifts. Clockmaker Peter Henlein (1485-1542) is often credited as the inventor of the watch. He was one of the first German craftsmen who made "clock-watches", ornamental timepieces worn as pendants, which were the first timepieces to be worn on the body. However, other German clockmakers were crafting miniature timepieces around the same time and there is no conclusive evidence that Henlein was the first. These 'clock-watches' were attached to clothing or worn on a chain around the neck. They were heavy drum-shaped cylindrical brass boxes several inches in diameter, engraved and ornamented, and only had an hour movement indicator. The movement indicators were made of iron or steel and held together with tapered pins and wedges which were replaced by screws after 1550. Those early clock-watches were not worn to tell the time. The accuracy of their verge and foliot movements were very poor, characterized by a high probability of errors of several hours daily which made practically useless in terms of efficient time-keeping. They were rather more suitable as jewellery and novelties for the nobility, valued for their fine ornamentation, nice shape, or intriguing mechanism. In the 1960s, the invention of the quartz watch which could operate through electricity and kept time with a vibrating quartz crystal was an important milestone for the industry. During the 1980s quartz watches dominated mechanical watches in terms of popularity, a situation referred to as the "quartz crisis". Although mechanical watches are still available at the high end of the market, most watches now have quartz movements. Orphelia is a company that is involved in the production of watches.
