About Unwins

Founder of the company William Unwin, sold his first seed in 1903. William was soon hybridizing sweet peas, offering large flowering kinds and many colours. In 1914 his son Charles joined the company, going on to become one of the best sweet pea breeders of the century. As a second son Frank joined, their specialisation was furthered to gladioli. From here the company decided to become general seedsmen, and expand the range to offer flowers and vegetables. 1950 saw the decision to provide full-colour seed packs to garden centres as they started to become more and more popular, deviating fro their popular methods of mail order. The change was a huge success and allowed the company to continue to grow to a point where today it has the largest share in the amateur seed market. Their breeding work continues and their sweet peas have the largest annual trial of sweat peas in the world. Every operation from sowing to harvesting and sorting is done by hand and placed into an apron pouch to be quickly sorted into labelled sacks. Tests are done for aspects such as vigour and powers of germination, prior to packaging. Also before packaging. Seeds are stored in a special chamber with an environment of 20°C and 20% humidity, comparable to the midday Sahara! It is in the same room that the seeds as sealed into foil sachets to secure the microclimate around the seed for its journey.
