Founded in 2011, with headquarters in Berlin, Wimdu is one of the leading marketplaces online for private rented accommodation. The company was created with the intention of providing a solution to the overly expensive and impersonal hotels, thus the co-founders, Arne Blackwenn and Hinrich Dreiling decided to create a site where people could find more affordable options. Within their first four months of operation, Wimdu became the second largest online marketplace for private accommodation rentals. They now have more than 350,000 properties listed in over 150 countries and 2.5 million users registered. Home owners are given the chance to earn some money when not using their property, and travellers are given the chance to stay in a homely setting for great prices.

In order to find your accommodation of choice, you can type your location of interest as well as check in and check out dates and number of guests into search bars. This search then produces all the available properties in that area. These are shown on a map and listed so that you can look through the options and the one you are looking at will be highlighted on the map. It is also possible to filter through the properties by selecting the property type (apartment, holiday home, private room), setting a price minimum and maximum, selecting the number of bedrooms, or selecting amenities such as wifi, tv, air conditioning, balconies, hot tubs, disabled access, available parking, smoking permission and swimming pools.
