proper walks, decent conversation, none of the hassle of driving hairpin roads (which I am awful at — left-side panic, anyone?). The days are nicely paced with 7–9 mile hikes, a brilliant Milford Sound cruise, a cosy night at Milford Sound Lodge and even a relaxed vineyard tasting in Marlborough. Meals were better than I’d dared hope in quite remote spots — real effort put into food.
There are tiny foibles: a couple of long van stretches and the odd early start that had me grumbling (but then I’d see another fiord and shut up). It’s not perfect, but it works — keeps me active, sociable and strangely recharged when I’m back home fitting walks into my weekly routine. I used the bike every day, the walks were a nice change of pace, and the little rituals — coffee stops, pies, ice cream — somehow made the days. The guides were the real surprise; they never made a big deal of helping, but they sorted things, told the best local stories and even found a quiet spot for stargazing one night when I wasn’t expecting it. Weather was hit-and-miss, but they worked round it, so my initial fear about the elements faded. I did worry about the price, and yes it isn’t cheap, but the hassle-free planning and the stuff you wouldn’t have discovered on your own made it feel like money well spent. We covered a good chunk of the island by bike and on foot, and I came home tired in the best possible way. Would I do it again? Definitely — though I might pack fewer shirts.
