The SIM has played a silent and significant role in the world of telecommunications, and people tend to overlook it. The Subscriber Identity Module has held phone numbers and authenticated identities on cellular networks. It also stored contact information before people commonly used email for this purpose.
As technology has evolved, many physical components have gradually been replaced by digital alternatives. This shift is also fuelled by the rise of embedded SIMs, commonly known as eSIMs. This technology has become a significant part of modern telecommunications. It has also benefited travelers, who can use a reliable travel eSIM to avoid the limitations of physical SIM cards.
Where the SIM Card Came From
The German company Giesecke & Devrient decided to partner with Finnish operator Radiolinja. This partnership in 1991 resulted in the launch of the first SIM card. Back then, it was credit-card-sized, popularly known as "full-size". But very few people have actually seen one.
As phones slimmed down, so did the SIM. The next version was the Mini SIM, followed by the Micro SIM. In 2012, the Nano SIM debuted and became the smallest and most widely adopted physical SIM format
Part of the appeal was portability. Pull the card out of one phone, put it in another, and the number and account go with it. That's probably why a SIM never quite felt like a hidden network credential.
Why the Physical Card Became a Problem for Manufacturers
SIM trays generally take up space that could otherwise be used for batteries, camera modules, and speakers.
Water and dust resistance is the other issue. Any opening in the housing is one more spot where a seal can fail, which gives manufacturers chasing higher IP ratings a reason to want the tray gone. Manufacturing and distribution cost money too. Physical SIMs get made, shipped to carrier stores, handed out in person, or mailed. A downloadable profile skips all of that.
How eSIM Actually Works
People think an eSIM is like an app. It's not. It's a tiny chip soldered onto the phone board at the factory. The chip works the same as always. What's new is how you set it up. Instead of coming with a carrier already on it, it's blank and gets loaded remotely. This is usually done via QR code or app. This process is known as Remote SIM Provisioning (RSP). This allows a single chip to store multiple carrier profiles, making it possible to switch between them without physically replacing the SIM card.
The iPhone XS and the Pixel 3 were the first phones where the eSIM was introduced. At first, this addition was seen just as an add-on, a handy option for a secondary number. It had not yet become the primary option for users, but when Apple removed the SIM tray from its US-specific models, the dynamics shifted.
This was the first time a major smartphone went entirely eSIM. That pushed other companies and carriers to get on board. Now most flagship phones support eSIM either alongside the tray or instead of it. Outside the U.S., the shift is gradual and will depend on how fast the telecommunications sphere evolves in these places.
The Traveler Quotient
The shift is particularly relevant to international travel, where the limitations of physical SIM cards become more apparent. Landing somewhere new used to mean picking between two bad options: pay the home carrier's roaming rates, often billed by the day or the megabyte in a way that adds up fast, or hunt down a local SIM. The second option meant a retail counter, a passport for registration, a plan explained in a language you might not speak, and a SIM ejector tool you probably left at home.
An eSIM doesn't just make this more convenient; it changes the order things happen in. A traveler can buy a travel eSIM data plan for their destination before leaving home, since provisioning happens remotely. They can then connect to the local network of their desired destination upon landing. So, no store visits, no need for swapped cards. The home SIM stays put too, since most modern phones can run an eSIM next to a physical SIM or a second eSIM.
None of this is universal yet. Plenty of phones don't support eSIM, mostly older or budget models. Plenty of countries don't have carriers offering eSIM plans either, especially in markets where physical distribution is still more practical.
Where This Is Headed
The physical SIM tray hasn't disappeared. It's still standard in budget phones, in markets where eSIM infrastructure lags, and as a fallback even in phones that support eSIM. But the direction seems clear: eSIM is gradually becoming the default rather than the alternative. Like headphone jacks and removable batteries before it, the physical SIM may eventually become another feature that people stop noticing once its digital replacement becomes the norm.
