Think back to the last unfamiliar website you opened. There is a fair chance you never typed its address. You tapped a link in a message, opened an app, or put two or three words into a search box and took whichever result looked closest. They have not stopped mattering. A site's name is still what tells you where you have landed, what you repeat to a friend who asks, and what you reach for when you want to get back to somewhere you saw last year. It does quiet work all day, and most of us only notice it when it fails.

The names that stay with us

Human memory for web addresses is short. We hold a handful properly, the ones we type without thinking, and everything else lives in a browser history or an unclosed tab. What separates the two groups is rarely the quality of the site. It is whether the name survives being heard once.

The ones that survive have things in common. They are short enough to say in a single breath, and they spell the way they sound, so nobody hearing them has to guess between an s and a z. They also avoid the compromises that creep in once the obvious version has gone: a hyphen dropped into the middle, or a number standing in for a word.

That is why some website names are much easier for users to remember than others. Someone setting up a page for a five-a-side team or a photography project will run version after version through a domain name search, testing each option against a plain question: could a person hear this once and type it correctly a week later? Anyone choosing a domain name quickly discovers that many of the simplest options are already taken, which can lead to shorter names being altered with hyphens, numbers or other variations.

Reading an address from the right

We read left to right, and web addresses do not reward the habit. The part that identifies a site is not the first thing you see. It sits at the end of the opening section of the address, immediately before the first single slash: the name, plus its ending. Everything to the left of that can be set to whatever the owner likes, which is why a familiar word appearing early in a long address tells you very little on its own.

Phones do not make this any easier. A small screen shows only part of a long address, and many browsers now shorten it or tuck it away once you start scrolling, so the piece that carries the meaning is often the piece you cannot see. Endings carry information, though less of it than people assume. A .co.uk suggests a site meant for people in Britain, and a .org once suggested something non-commercial. The UK family is managed by Nominet, which runs the UK registry.

What an ending cannot do is certify the site behind it. Nothing stops a .org from being a commercial operation, and a professional business website registered last month sits on exactly the same class of address as one that has been running since 1998. Newer endings muddy things further, because a reader who has never encountered one has no idea whether it signals anything at all. For users, recognising the name is simply the first step in understanding where they have landed.

When the name changes, we lose the thread

Names are also where the internet quietly forgets things. According to Pew Research Center's analysis of pages sampled between 2013 and 2023, around a quarter were no longer reachable by October 2023, and most of that loss involved individual pages removed from sites that were still working. The longer something has been online, in other words, the less likely the link you were given still lands where it did.

For a reader this shows up in small ways. A bookmark lands on a redesigned homepage with no sign of the article you saved. A recipe you have cooked for years returns a not-found page. A company rebrands, moves to a new address, and the old one eventually stops resolving, taking every link anyone ever shared with it. We file these things under the name, so when the name goes, the memory has nowhere to point.

As fewer people explore unfamiliar websites directly, the names we already recognise can become more useful when we want to return to a site.
