I asked about a replacement or even a partial refund, and neither was offered. We have stopped feeling safe using it. I’m glad we spotted the problem before carrying on as normal, but it has been a frustrating, expensive lesson.
Works fine, but the handover was muddled
the Vortex does the job, but getting hold of it was much more confusing than it needed to be. I first spotted EV-Lectron while reading Tesla charging discussions, and a mate later mentioned the Vortex as well. After ordering through the EV-Lectron site, I received a Best Buy order number and then nothing at all. Best Buy initially couldn’t locate the order, and the website didn’t offer an obvious way to reach a real person. Eventually I found out the unit was sitting at Best Buy ready for collection. Their staff explained that updates for third-party orders had to come from the third party, which simply never happened. Maybe Shop is involved somewhere, but I still don’t know where the communication broke down. Bit of a shame really, because the product itself worked properly at a Tesla Supercharger.
Not a smooth ride, but at least I got my money back
the adapter itself wasn’t the disaster — the company’s handling of it was. I got a Kia-to-Tesla adapter for Christmas and was proper excited to extend the range, so I went to a Supercharger the day after Christmas to try it out. Plugged it in, opened the Tesla app, and… nothing. It just wouldn’t charge. Bit of a dampener.
Not great, not terrible — muddled warranty handling
photos, videos, detailed descriptions, confirming serial numbers three times. It’s the sort of thing you accept if it works, but it felt unnecessary when they’d already agreed to a replacement.
Using the charger while it still mostly worked was straightforward — the cable is comfortable, the connector clicks in, the build feels decent for the price. The surprise was how intermittent the fault was: sometimes it would charge fine, other times it would refuse to authorise, which made the whole thing unpredictable. That unpredictability is what I hated most; a home charger should be boring and reliable.
Customer contact lacked automation — they explicitly asked me to message them once the return was posted because they don’t get automatic notifications. That’s telling, isn’t it? It suggested internal processes are manual and a bit fragile. I’ve had worse service from smaller companies, and better from bigger names, so this sits somewhere in the middle. Eventually they did send the label and said they’d process the replacement once they saw the returned item in stock. Reasonable, but drawn out.
If you’re deciding between this and a Tesla-branded charger: this one is cheaper and feels fine to use, but there’s a risk it may fail within a couple of years (that was my experience). If you value peace of mind and smoother support, spending more on the Tesla unit might be worth it. For now I’d say the product itself is okay, but the warranty handling needs proper automation and fewer back-and-forths.
