About Trusted Housesitters
Founded in 2010, Trusted Housesitters is na online company that matches home and pet owners who are concerned about leaving their house empty whilst away, or that do not want to leave their pets in an expensive and impersonal kennel, with sitters who need a cheap place to stay and enjoy the company of animals. This benefits both sides as the owners get to relax on their holiday and feel sure that their pets are safe, as well as saving money by not having to hire a petsitter or rent out a kennel. On the other hand the sitters also benefit from free accomodation for anywhere from a weekend to a year. I.D. checks are done on both sides before the site allows any transactions to occur.

Last year my husband & I used "Trusted Housesitters" to look after our home and little cat for 2 weeks. A couple responded from the south of England - we are in NE Scotland. We were all booked up in late January with them for our holiday in June. We met them a week before they were due to arrive at our home in Aberdeen as they were visiting and staying with family there. Everything seemed wonderful. !! They arrived at our home the day before our departure. We communicated via WhatsApp and I became concerned as they were hardly ever in our home during any of the days - they were constantly away visiting friends or out sightseeing. I became concerned about how neglected our little cat might be. Also our home is quite isolated. On our return home my fears came to light. They had left before we arrived home on the day of our return. Our front door had been left unlocked. Our little cat was nowhere to be seen. The bottom of the bath was left full of dried foam. Cutlery, crockery in the kitchen was covered in watermarks. Our garden and greenhouse had been terrible neglected with lack of water - we have hoses available which we showed them. My house plant pots were full of water - obviously watered the night before. They also watered an artificial plant which looks nothing like real and ruined an antique table belonging to my late parents. They had been in rooms which they weren't required to be in and left furniture moved. I have also discovered personal items missing. Our little cat eventually arrived home hours later but extremely frightened. She was a rescue cat which we had adopted 5 years ago. She had obviously had to fend for herself being shut out all night. She always likes to be in the house at night. This couple used our home as a sleep over for visiting their family instead of looking after our home and little cat. They had also left a lot of their rubbish behind - beer bottles and wine bottles!!!!! for us to clear up. We had a wonderful holiday celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary but ruined by these two very selfish, untidy and totally untrustworthy individuals. I feel very concerned and worried about leaving a stranger/strangers looking after our home again. Would I shop again? - I'm not sure.
I did not have the best experience with Trusted House Sitters. I had a simple request – take care of one adorable cat for 3 weeks. I had three responses to that request and within days all of them declined because they got ‘better offers.’ One didn’t want to travel across borders due to corona which I understood. So I lost all three and then started doing research on profiles and inviting people to apply. Everyone turned me down. One of the people who accepted told me she was positive that she would come so I bought my flights. The next day she declined. A stressful emotional roller coaster. THS has a guarantee which I was counting on if this didn’t work: ‘If you do not receive any sitter applications within 14 days of posting your first listing, you’ll receive your money back with no strings attached.’ While I did receive applications, all of them cancelled their applications so in effect there were no valid applications. I finally found a cat sitter through friends and contacted THS for a refund since I met the criteria of no valid application during the first two weeks. They refused my request for a refund. This coronavirus has given companies the opportunity to take advantage of their customers. I’ve been fighting two airlines for 6 months to get refunds on flights they cancelled. Ive had hotels with free cancellation policies refuse to refund me, and now this. I hope everyone remembers who treated them right and who didn’t during this crisis and that we make sure those companies who were greedy are not patronized when things get better.
