    Moved for work, pleasantly surprised

I signed up because I was moving to Madrid and, after a couple of rubbish experiences with clunky language apps, I wanted something quicker and more practical. Cudoo (learningonline.xyz) lets you try seven courses for free and honestly that trial was the clincher — you can give it a proper go before handing over money, which felt fair. The micro-lessons and short videos work well on phone and laptop, the cultural snippets are genuinely useful, and I liked that it isn’t all textbook droning. Not perfect — some modules rush through things and subtitles wobble sometimes — but registration was painless, playback on my commute was smooth and I ended up buying a bundle. Glad I did.

Coffee, a tip and suddenly French

I first spotted it because a colleague at work mentioned it over coffee — they'd used it to learn Arabic and couldn't stop praising it, so I thought, why not, a bit curious. The lessons were really well delivered, bite-sized and not boring, and when I needed help customer service were genuinely helpful; I had a mix-up with my schedule and they sorted it without faff. After a month I went from knowing nothing to being able to start conversations, which surprised me. It felt like a proper little investment in myself. I'm happy with the whole experience, would recommend if you want something that actually works.

    Small-talk lightbulb

I was halfway through a rainy Tuesday lesson when it hit me — I could actually make small talk in Lebanese, properly, and not just repeat phrases like a parrot. That’s the moment I knew this course worked. It’s gentle, very practical (you do need a smattering of Arabic letters beforehand — I wish that had been clearer), and the modules line up sensibly even if I sometimes skipped ahead by mistake. I’d had a couple of rubbish experiences with glossier apps that promised fluency overnight, so this felt refreshingly proper and human. I’m keen to try other dialects and the fuller Arabic writing courses next; modestly pleased and a bit surprised, to be honest. Small wins, but satisfying and useful.

A small win, not a breakthrough

Halfway through the second ASL lesson I caught myself signing a whole little sentence to my partner and thought, hang on, this might actually stick — that was the point I felt satisfied. The course bundle had three ASL lessons, plus bits on scuba and baby signs. Those extra modules were unexpectedly handy; the toddler section actually taught a couple of signs I used with my niece. But mostly the ASL lessons focus on single-word vocabulary. There's almost no grammar or sentence structure, which is important because ASL isn't just English with hands. I picked up a few new signs, not enough to call myself confident. Also annoyingly I couldn't find a straightforward way to message support. Decent for basics, but limited.

Mixed bag but pleased in the end

Right in the middle of a small panic when I spotted a weird translation on the site — I thought oh no, here we go again — but the delivery and customer service actually saved it. I messaged them about the odd wording and got a proper reply within a day, polite and honest, not the usual corporate copy-paste. The parcel arrived on time, nicely packed, so that was a relief. I’ve had worse with other firms who never reply, so this felt almost novel. The price wasn’t brilliant, could be a tad cheaper, but for the quick help and timely delivery I’m happy enough. So yeah, not perfect, but grateful it turned out smoother than I expected.
