By the time summer arrived, the CAAD13 had become more of a warranty project than a bike. I bought it new from Sigma in October 2020, expecting the usual new-bike peace of mind. Instead, the frame paint started bubbling and, later on, the hydraulic brakes failed as well.
Fine Until Something Goes Wrong
The frustrating bit is that the bike itself was not the problem; it was everything that happened around the one missing part. I’d put together an order of roughly £3,000, including a bike and accessories, using my CycleScheme voucher. Most of it showed as available, while one component was listed as arriving in a few weeks. That sounded manageable at the time. I then got an email saying the bike build had been scheduled, with a delivery date attached, so naturally I assumed it was all moving along. That date passed quietly. No update, no explanation. When I contacted Sigma, I found out the outstanding component had been delayed. The rest of the order only went out after I’d chased them, which was disappointing, because splitting the shipment should really have been suggested from the outset. Then there was more waiting. Months, actually, without anyone getting in touch. I had to ask again for an update and was told the same part had moved back by another year. Supply delays happen, I get that, especially with bike components. What I struggle with is being left to discover every delay myself. Because the purchase was through CycleScheme, a straightforward refund apparently wasn’t possible. I was given £379 in shop credit instead. By then I’d also placed a separate cash order, and asked whether some of that credit could be refunded or applied to the newer purchase. I was told somebody would come back to me. Nobody did. After another couple of weeks, and another follow-up from me, I was told it could not be applied retrospectively after all. So I’m left with credit for things I neither need nor had planned to buy. The apologies were polite, but the practical help was pretty limited. Buying in-stock items may be fine, but I wouldn’t risk an item with an uncertain lead time, particularly through a voucher scheme. It’s a shame, as I expected much better after spending that amount, and I won’t be pointing my cycling mates their way.
