I went in a bit sceptical, having had a couple of rushed tours with other operators, but Noé from Bucay really made the difference. He knows the area back to front — plants, people, the best viewpoints — and he didn't just follow a script. He drove us safely through the twists, picked small interesting side-stops and told local stories in a way that felt genuine, not rehearsed. Day one was the cloud forest reserve and an eye-opening meeting with Shuar community members; day two we climbed up into El Cajas at about 13,000 ft, which for me was a new altitude record and worth every breath. A lucky detour into Cuenca let us visit Boris Ordoñez's OFF gallery and take a quick city circuit, all without feeling rushed. The overnight at Hacienda La Danesa was pure comfort — I even had the place to myself for dinner, which was a nice surprise. Started doubtful, finished properly pleased. Tiny timing hiccups, but nothing that spoiled it.
Mostly sorted, a few caveats
I booked them with quite a lot of scepticism — we'd had a bad run with another agency and I’ve got a dodgy back, so I didn't want to be stuck sorting transfers or heavy luggage myself. From the first call Juan sorted a tailor-made plan and followed through; everything on the islands was arranged, from transfers to the snorkelling trips. The guides were friendly, especially those on the snorkelling, and the boat crews were helpful and on time — that really helped. They even put on a fresh fish lunch with rice and salad. The hotels (Santa Cruz and Isabela) were decent and breakfasts were fine. There were a couple of small hiccups at check-in but nothing major. Be aware if you go in colder months — ask them to include wetsuits. Overall relieved and glad it worked out; I’ll use them again.
