I was just leaving for work when the wheel gave way — not dramatic, just a slow wobble and then the tyre went. It’s weird to think about now because the bike looked fine on the doorstep, but when you actually put weight on it the rim felt rough and the spokes weren’t sitting right. I paid over £1,100 and waited more than a month for it, so you can imagine my frustration. I use a bike every day for commuting and quick shopping trips, so reliability matters to me more than anything. The burst tube was caused by exposed screw heads and badly finished spoke ends rubbing through the tube, which is the sort of thing you notice by feel before it becomes a problem — a scratchy noise, a slight catch when you pedal.
First-winter surprise ride
the build felt upbeat rather than fiddly, and it handled regular hills easily while seated. Average speeds of around 20 km/h were realistic even for me, someone who hasn’t been riding regularly.
A few practical notes from the early rides. Cold matters more than I thought — windproof layers are a must if you live anywhere chilly, especially on longer rides. The headlight is fine for seeing ahead on quiet roads, but I wouldn’t trust it alone for fast downhill stretches in proper dark. Also, the buttons are annoyingly close together; gloves make button-pressing a bit of a lottery. I accidentally switched the headlight off once in a tunnel because I missed by a millimetre — not ideal. Some backlighting on the control buttons would have saved me from that little heart-skip.
Mudguards are a weak spot. The front one sits too tight and slightly short, so anything small — slush, wet gravel — can rub or splash up onto the lower part of the battery. I fixed it with a cheap rubber flap extension and that helped a lot. The rear guard could use a similar extension; my saddlebag and back got splashed on wet tracks. Speaking of the saddlebag (the Vakole 17–35 litre one), it’s better than I expected. Good pockets, holds a lot. But load it unevenly and the Velcro fastening won’t cinch it down properly, so you need to pack carefully.
The display could be smarter. The battery bars are vague — five bars that aren’t intuitive — so why not a percentage? Wouldn’t need to be exact, but it’d be far more useful. Also, occasionally pedalling without assistance feels weighty and other times pleasantly light; I’m still figuring out whether it’s down to speed, cadence or something in the settings. One quirk: the rear axle seems recessed so you can’t just attach a trailer hitch in the usual way. The manual doesn’t make that clear, which is annoying if you were planning on hauling a trailer or child seat.
There’s a “walking assist” mode that’s a bit too brisk for slow pushing — six km/h up a wet, slippy slope isn’t exactly restful. Small improvements would make a big difference: clearer menu text on the display, slightly longer mudguards, button spacing or illumination, and a percentage battery readout. But overall, for someone who barely knew e-bikes two weeks ago, this one turned out to be a genuine, pleasantly surprising find. It’s not perfect, but when it works — especially on that damp climb where I first smiled properly — it feels like the right companion for everyday rides.Small breach of trust
I’ve dealt with these lot for about three years — bought three bikes and a steady stream of spares because, frankly, things kept failing. For the most part support was decent and they sometimes replaced bits without charge, so I didn’t complain. The thing that changed my view was the last motor I bought (€300). Fitted it exactly as instructed, used it the same way we always do, and after six months it died. Their reply was a one-liner blaming “controller overload” and saying it’s outside warranty. That stuck in my throat — there was no overload, no reckless use, just normal deliveries. After that they more or less went quiet. It’s a small detail but how they handled the claim matters more than any single faulty part; it was the vague excuse and the silence that pushed me away. I was actually planning to order 20–30 more bikes for our expanding service, but I’m actively looking for another supplier now. Previously another vendor sorted a similar issue faster, so that comparison stings.
Long wait, small consolation
I was tentative about pre-ordering from them — the price looked fair and I wanted a new e‑bike for commuting and weekend rides, but the long lead time made me uneasy. Still, I went ahead and paid because I thought it was worth the wait. The problems started when the shipping date kept slipping and updates were vague; that really confirmed my worries. I phoned a few times, chased emails, and spent ages trying to get a straight answer. In the end I cancelled when it became clear I’d miss the summer riding I’d planned. To be fair, they did refund the money eventually, which I’m relieved about — that worry is gone. But it doesn’t undo the lost months, the hassle of dealing with currency conversion, and the time spent chasing them. So yes, grateful the refund arrived, and I can move on, but I wouldn’t risk another pre-order like this if I needed the bike for a season. A useful lesson learned.
