    Half unsure, mostly pleased

licence arrived in my inbox and the download manager did its job without fuss. Customer service answered a small setup question within a day, which I appreciated. Sound-wise the woodwinds sit nicely in my mock-ups; they’re musical and fairly detailed for the price. I did expect a few more articulations in the Core, or a way to buy extras without the full mic pack — lots of times I don’t need all the mics, just the extra articulations. Also the bassoon staccatissimo felt a bit loose, not the tight bite I hoped for, but it’s usable and I get good results after some editing. So yeah, started sceptical, ended up satisfied. It’s become part of my daily composing routine at home.

Handy but a bit of a faff

the sounds are lovely for sketching and small scores at home, and I’ve used it for film bits and string beds when I’m producing on the laptop — it does the job. The annoying part is it’s a Kontakt library only, not a standalone player, so you need Native Access and Kontakt set up. A clear step-by-step setup guide would save so much time: enter the Spitfire serial in Native Access or the library shows as demo in Kontakt, and if you add it manually you’ve got to know where to place folders and how to point Kontakt (I keep forgetting — the interface is rubbish). It’s not perfect, some rough edges, but once loaded it sounds great and I reach for it often.
