Hosting purchase turned into an ID ordeal

The point where I knew I was done was when I realised buying a year of web hosting for my UK VAT-registered company was apparently going to involve a photo of me holding my passport. Honestly, I had to read the request twice. The payment was coming from the company account, it had been approved in the banking app, and I was paying upfront for a digital service. Yet because I currently live in Türkiye, the order was put into manual review and I was asked for a selfie with government ID plus a recent utility bill showing matching details. It felt completely out of proportion. I’m not against security checks, not at all. Fraud exists, fair enough, and companies need sensible procedures. But there has to be some balance. This wasn’t a loan, a credit agreement or an expensive item being shipped somewhere. It was basic hosting. I’ve used other providers before, including ones that requested an extra confirmation, but none made me feel like I was trying to sneak past border control just to set up a website. What made it worse was the lack of common sense around the business itself. It is an active UK company, with a valid VAT registration, and the card payment was legitimate. That should count for something. Instead, the whole process gave me the impression that international customers are treated as suspicious by default, which is not a great feeling. Maybe that isn’t the intention, but that is absolutely how it came across. I decided not to send highly personal documents for such a straightforward purchase. There are plenty of hosting companies around, and several manage to verify customers without asking for a passport selfie and household paperwork. It’s a shame, because I specifically wanted to use a UK provider. In the end, the service never even started, but the onboarding experience alone was enough to make me look elsewhere. Security is important, yes, but this was intrusive and unnecessarily frustrating.

Olesia makes the tricky bits bearable

Honestly, I’d probably have given up on this issue without Olesia stepping in. I first came across Krystal after a colleague recommended them, and support is usually quick enough, though the odd explanation can feel a bit too technical for someone like me. Olesia is the exception every time. She doesn’t just point you towards a help article and leave you to it; she actually understands what you’re trying to do, even when you haven’t explained it terribly well. She keeps things clear, calm and surprisingly human. This isn’t the first problem she’s sorted for me, and each time I’ve come away relieved rather than more confused. She’s a real credit to the company.
