A job that turned into a headache

I started chasing this order before I’d even had a chance to use the sand, which says it all really. I ordered a pallet of kiln-dried sand from Brisks on 8 April, expecting it two days later for some paving work we had planned. Nothing arrived on the 10th, and the frustrating bit was the complete silence. No message, no revised date, nothing. Their phone line was a dead end, so eventually I emailed and was told they didn’t actually have stock available. It finally showed up on the 16th, but roughly half the bags were soaked through. Kiln-dried sand that is already wet is pretty much useless for what I needed, so that was especially annoying. They said they would collect the damaged bags and send replacements by 24 April. Again, that date passed without a word. By the 29th I was still waiting, with calls and emails going unanswered. It’s been a proper inconvenience, especially as the work had to be delayed. I’m not usually one to complain, but this felt badly handled from start to finish.

Four pallets, three arrivals and a lot of chasing

materials arrive, people turn up, garden gets sorted. That was the plan anyway. At around 11am on the Friday, I got a call saying the delivery would not be arriving that day. The person on the phone described it as a “free upgrade to weekend delivery”, which was a slightly odd sales pitch considering I had paid for Friday and needed it on Friday. It felt a bit like being told your cancelled train has been upgraded to a bus, but you should be grateful. I explained about the landscapers and was basically told that it was not their fault. There was no real attempt to understand the problem or help find a solution. They did promise, quite confidently, that everything would arrive on Saturday morning. So I rang the landscapers, who thankfully agreed to move things around and come on Saturday once the delivery had landed. Saturday morning arrived, and at 9.30am the lorry appeared. For about five minutes I thought we were back on track. Then I counted the pallets. Three. Not four. Somehow, after missing the original paid-for delivery, they had managed to make the replacement delivery incomplete as well. The driver initially wanted to leave the three pallets on the pavement rather than put them on my driveway. That led to a fairly awkward fifteen-minute stand-off and a call to his manager before he eventually moved them where they were meant to go. Not exactly the sort of thing you want to be dealing with before breakfast on a Saturday. The landscapers arrived at 11am, took one look at the missing material and understandably could not start properly. Without all the aggregate, there was no point beginning the work. I ended up paying £120 for their time despite the job being delayed. That was the part that really stung, if I’m honest. Delays happen, I do get that. Lorries break down, stock goes missing, weekends are busy. But when someone has paid extra for a specified date and has trades booked, there needs to be some ownership of the issue. Over the weekend there was nobody available to sort it out, so Monday morning I started trying to call. The phone line kept cutting off because the inbox was apparently full. I rang repeatedly, probably eight or ten times over about an hour and a half, before eventually trying the online message service. I finally got a call back around 11.15am. I explained the situation, including the £120 I was out of pocket, and was told the double bank holiday weekend had caused delays. That explanation did not really cover why a nearly empty truck had turned up with only three of my four pallets, but there we are. I was told someone would speak to a manager about compensation and that the missing pallet would be delivered that Monday. No follow-up call came, but I did receive a text and email saying it would arrive between 1.45pm and 3.45pm. It did not. Nearly two hours after that slot had passed, the delivery company phoned to say it could not be delivered until Tuesday, with another promise of a guaranteed morning drop. Tuesday started with the phone lines still not working, so I used the online messaging again. A member of staff called me back and said the matter was being taken very seriously, that she would personally keep an eye on the delivery, and would contact me once it had arrived. I received several changing delivery windows throughout the day: first late morning, then a little later, then early afternoon. It was like watching a slow-moving game of timetable bingo. The pallet eventually arrived at 3.05pm. It was a relief, obviously, but by then the garden work had been pushed back by more than a week and the pallets were still taking up most of the driveway. What has bothered me most is that, despite several assurances, nobody came back to me afterwards. No update, no compensation discussion, no acknowledgement of the wasted money or inconvenience. I even waited a week before writing this because I thought perhaps someone would get in touch once the dust had settled. Nothing. Ordering was easy enough at the start, and the materials did eventually arrive, but the delivery promises and the lack of proper customer care made the whole experience far more stressful than it needed to be. I would not use them again, especially not for a time-sensitive project.
