Faulty timer, awkward return, but problem resolved in the end

don’t expect smooth customer service but fight it and you’ll probably get what you’re entitled to. Bought a cheap egg timer from a Denby pop-up in the outlet about ten days ago and it simply didn’t time anything correctly. I use timers all the time—boiled eggs, quick bakes, that kind of daily stuff—so I noticed straight away; it would say three minutes and go off at one, or not at all. Pointless.
I checked the same model online and other buyers reported the same fault, so I took it back for a refund rather than an exchange. That’s where things went odd. The store manager refused flat out, saying head office policy is “no refunds”. She pointed to a “no refunds” sign and wouldn’t look at the consumer rights guidance I showed on my phone. She was quite dismissive, wouldn’t engage, repeated the same line and basically shut the conversation down. For the record I had the till receipt and could show payment details if needed.
At first I was annoyed — not because of the £2.99 (it’s trivial), but because it felt like principle and basic consumer protection. I was sceptical they’d change their stance, given the manager’s attitude, and I muttered about taking it further. So I went home, looked up the Consumer Rights Act 2015 properly, then phoned head office. That call changed things. Head office were, in contrast, reasonable: they confirmed a faulty item returned within 30 days should be refunded and authorised the refund immediately. I went back in, got my money, and the whole thing was closed.
So: dry facts — product faulty, shop staff unhelpful and irritating with “no refunds” signage, initial refusal to consider the legal point. Then the slightly surprising turnaround once head office intervened. Practical takeaway: keep your proof of purchase, be prepared to push it up the chain if the shop front won’t cooperate, and don’t give up just because the staff are blunt. It’s annoying that it came down to persistence for a trivial amount, but at least the retailer ultimately followed the law and refunded me. That’s where the scepticism turned into a reasonably satisfactory outcome.

Plates that just keep on going

sturdy without being ridiculous, glaze still looks good after weeks in the dishwasher and the microwave, so that was my main worry — and it's fine. I didn't pick the exact floral I'd loved (too tempted, nearly caved), chose something plainer instead. It's oddly comforting to have bits that behave, makes life a bit easier. Quite glad I went back to a brand that just works.
