A bumpy but enlightening application experience 22 April 2026

clear advert, clear initial contact. That’s the unexpected pleasant bit — it’s not often that a company asks about availability right away. I did ask for the exact time and address once I accepted the interview; I wanted to be sure and, frankly, a bit nervous because I’m new to the area. No reply came that day, which I was willing to shrug off — busy times happen. I followed up and, again, nothing for a while. Then, rather out of the blue, I received a message saying they wouldn’t progress my application because of the “tone” of my messages. That felt strange — and a little hurtful — because my messages were polite and simply clarifying dates and location.
I did write back to ask for the manager’s contact details and to say I found the comment offensive and unprofessional; I’m not desperate for work, just keen to do something useful. I won’t pretend I wasn’t annoyed, but there were still things I liked: the job description was honest, the initial reply was quick and the person did at least give travel info (about 30 minutes) when asked. So there’s a mix — good organisation on the posting and early contact, but a breakdown in follow-up and an odd decision at the end.
A surprise — in a small way — was how much it mattered to me that someone simply confirmed a time and place. Little things like that make a big difference. If they’d replied with a time I’d probably be starting a new routine now. As it stands, I’m left with a slightly bemused but still hopeful feeling; I’d apply again to a better-managed team. Please, if you’re on the other side of a hiring email, just confirm the basics — it saves everyone a lot of fuss.
