I spent the 30 day trial poking around and kept coming back, so I nearly bit the bullet. I still hesitated because basic expense tracking was only in the Premium plan — bit of a surprise — and I found out I'd need a second subscription to keep personal books separate. Functionally it does what it promises once you get the FreshBooks method; tidy, sensible, not flawless. Some doubts dropped away, the usability is decent, but the cost doubt stayed. If they offered a cheaper add‑on or a smaller personal tier I'd sign up in a heartbeat.
Unpicking their mess
calculations that didn’t add up, some mandatory taxes they apparently never paid, and — the worst — about $15,000 was taken from my account supposedly to cover tax bills but there were no records of any payment. After weeks of nagging, they finally admitted they hadn’t paid and agreed to refund the cash. That bit was a relief, but only because getting proof out of them felt like pulling teeth. They also kept filing IRS forms even after I cancelled the service, which my accountant then had to sort out. I asked them to cover the accountant fees since it was their error; they sent back a copy of their T&Cs and basically washed their hands of it. I’ve had other providers who at least owned up and helped, so this felt more careless than anything. In the end I got the money back, so some closure, but it cost time, trust and a fair chunk of cash — won’t be using them again.
