Small wins, bigger let-downs 27 February 2026

a break with the kids, somewhere we could unpack and not worry too much. That bond model still makes sense to me — no annual service charge like a timeshare, and you can book where there’s availability. That really helps when you want to plan something around work and school holidays, so I’m grateful that the ownership side has been straightforward and useful in day-to-day life.
However, the travel/rental side let me down. This year we booked a two-week rental in Florida — big trip, two small children, all the usual faff. Most of the money was paid well before the final balance date in October, but about £2,000 was still due. Then the island was hit by two hurricanes. I delayed the final payment until I had a clearer idea of the situation — sensible, I thought — and phoned HPB to explain. Multiple conversations with staff followed and I paid about two weeks later once I felt it was safe to go.
On the day I paid I found an email from them saying the holiday would have been cancelled at 5pm on the due date if payment hadn’t been received, and there would be no refund of the user charge deposit. The tone of that message, and the fact that the only routes to pay were online or by phone (no cheque allowed), felt inflexible and unnecessarily harsh given the circumstances. Even more frustrating: there didn’t seem to be a clear complaints procedure, and the Operations Director’s stance wasn’t at all what I expected. So, I’ll keep supporting the property bond — it’s a solid concept and it’s done right for us in the past — but I can’t recommend their travel/rental service after this. Disappointed, but not giving up on the ownership side.
