it felt like walking into a pressure cooker for a timeshare sale. We booked the 90‑minute “orientation” but the moment they asked for credit card details up front and waved through acceptable membership profiles, I pulled the plug. Cancelling was a faff; one member of staff, Cecilia, was frankly unhelpful and a bit brusque — not what you want when you're trying to opt out. Another surprise was the photo packages: advertised as 550+ images, we paid about $160 and ended up with roughly 150 and poor downloads for certain trips. Videos were low quality and extra charges stacked on top. On arrival we were told only two queen beds were available unless we spent another few hundred to upgrade, so that’s another unexpected hit, roughly $800 in total extras for us. All that said, the resort itself is lovely and parts of the service impressed me, which is why it stings — good place, poor sales tactics.
A costly wake-up call at Xcaret
don’t join the Vacation Club — we lost money, patience and a bit of faith, but oddly I’m also glad it woke us up. We went into this because we needed a proper family escape after a year of moving house, Dad’s dodgy back and one too many cancelled plans. Xcaret used to be our go-to: cultural shows, family traditions, the lot. That’s why this stings so much, and why I’m still a little thankful it made us smarter about who we trust.
Half in love, half suspicious
warm stone underfoot, the smell of damp foliage after a rain, the little water channels that often make me forget there’s a busy world beyond the gates. That tactile stuff — the cool of a tiled pool edge, the give of loungers, the way a canopy bed rustles in a soft breeze at dusk — is mostly what we fell for and why we ended up buying in.
