30 once — not ideal when I had to be up at 06:00 for work in Berlin. That pretty much sums up my mixed feeling. I use this sleeper for weekend trips and the occasional midweek transfer when meetings are on the other side of the country, so I’ve travelled with them roughly ten times. When you catch a flash sale it’s a bargain, really; I’d book again just for those fares. Problem is, the full-price tickets can feel steep if you’re not lucky.
The main gripe is the announcements and the steward checks. There are announcements that go on longer than they need to, especially late at night and early morning, and on one trip the stewards did a name check down the corridor at 23:30. They didn’t demand the tickets, fair enough, but being woken for it when you’ve got an early start is annoying. I’m all for safety, but a quick knock or an earlier check would do. Also, some upper bunks rattle when upright — that carries into neighbouring cabins and makes sleep harder. It’s the sort of small mechanical fix that would make a big difference.
Other small things: a couple of sheets were split at the seams and we were short one pillow in our cabin. We muddled through, because by the time the steward turned up we were too tired to chase it. A couple of practical improvements would help a lot — email the train composition on the day, make the bunk fittings quieter, and cut the late-night announcements. All annoying, but the basics work: the beds are reasonably comfy, staff generally do their job, and it gets you where you need to go without faff when booked well.Night train, mixed bag
we all managed a few proper stretches of sleep, the boys woke up less grumpy than expected and that felt like a win. That said, the trip wasn’t flawless. On the way out we were short of pillows and blankets and couldn’t find staff to help after departure, and there was a faint smell of old smoke that never really left. The thin mattresses aren’t brilliant for adults, and the toilets in our carriage had no running water so we had to shuffle to the next one with the kids. Oddly, while making up the beds we found a sealed pack of salami tucked by the wall — weird but at least it was closed, made us laugh nervously. Overall I’d say for a budget option it did what we needed: a few compromises, a couple of surprises, but enough rest to make it worth booking again.
Not one I'd pick again
I wouldn’t recommend this overnight trip, and I’ll tell you why. I needed to get to Paris for an early meeting and, because I have a dodgy lower back, I specifically booked a sleeper so I could stretch out. That was the plan. In reality it fell well short.
Quirky overnight, worth a try
the sink in our cabin didn't work, the nearest loo was out of order and Comfort Class seats weren't very comfy. On the return we were downgraded and only a €25 gesture was offered, no free drinks either. A few reading lights were dead and at one point the train stood idle for over three hours with little info. Still, staff were friendly, departures were on time and the support desk helped sort bookings. Mixed bag really, but I enjoyed the adventure and I'm pleased we went.
Quietly impressed
classical, comfort and comfort plus. All were fine for sleep. Comfort and comfort plus give a firmer mattress and a heavier duvet. Comfort Plus has a bit more space and a sink, which is handy. Toilets were clean and usually stocked. Things are not perfect. Some fittings creak, the mattress isn't hotel-standard and once or twice there was a delay. Still, delays were rare on my trips. I ended up telling a colleague about it and they've used it since. Booking worked smoothly most times. Overall, a solid, reliable way to travel the route. Practical, uncomplicated and worth it when you want to avoid airports.
