    The point it all clicked

relaxed, friendly and not at all like a stiff sailing school where you’re ticking boxes all day. James was a big part of that. He knows his stuff, clearly, but explains things without making you feel daft for needing it said twice. Sometimes we’d stop and go over something again, other times we’d just get on with the sailing and learn as we went. That suited me much better than sitting through loads of theory. The course had a good structure, but it didn’t feel overly fixed. We had room to follow the weather, choose parts of the route and actually enjoy being out on the water. It felt like a real trip, not just a lesson with a checklist attached. It wasn’t flawless, mind you. A few bits moved around depending on conditions, and if you like every hour planned in advance, this style might test your patience a little. For me, though, that flexibility made sense. I also appreciated that there was help available before and after the course; questions didn’t seem like an inconvenience. By the end I had more confidence than I expected, a much clearer idea of sailing, and some genuinely good memories. I’d recommend it, especially if you want to learn without the whole thing feeling overly formal.

The reroute that ended up being the point

By the time we realised the BVI plan was off because the charter boats had been seized, I was already wondering whether this whole trip was going to turn into an expensive lesson in disappointment. A colleague had pointed me towards Sailing Virgins after I kept watching their YouTube videos, and I liked the idea, but I was not completely sold on the “instant community” side of it. It can sound a bit manufactured, can’t it?

Sailing lessons without the usual faff

lots of waiting around, vague instructions and an instructor who seemed more interested in his phone than the sails. We wanted to actually learn, but also have a holiday rather than spend a week being shouted at by knots. Sailing Virgins were brilliant from the first enquiry. I’d contacted a few schools after meeting people at the Annapolis Boat Show, and these lot were the quickest to reply without sending a load of salesy nonsense. They explained the dates, what was included, how the certificates worked and, importantly, what we needed to sort ourselves. It was all refreshingly straightforward. The ferry from St Thomas to Road Town was easier than expected too. We’d built it up in our heads as some complicated island-hopping mission, but it was about an hour and roughly $60, then we were there. Before the course, they introduced the group online, which I thought might be a bit awkward, but it actually helped. We were paired with three other people at a similar level and everyone was relaxed from day one. No weird crew drama, no one trying to become captain after ten minutes. Liam, our instructor, had that rare ability to teach without making you feel daft. He knew when to explain something properly and when to let us have a go, make a minor mess of it, then try again. We covered plenty of serious sailing stuff, but there was swimming, decent meals, little island stops and evenings ashore as well. It genuinely felt like a holiday with useful skills attached. The boat was larger than I expected, which was intimidating for about half an hour, then actually made the whole experience more comfortable. There was enough space for six of us, and learning on a bigger yacht has made smaller boats seem much less scary now. The whole trip was well organised, from provisioning in town to getting us back on schedule when weather changed. Also, it came in under budget because we didn’t need separate accommodation for the week. That was a rather nice surprise. I’d recommend them to anyone wanting sailing certificates without turning the process into a military exercise.

A sailing week with room to breathe

I knew I’d picked the right sort of trip when the pre-departure call didn’t feel like a sales pitch or a lecture. James just talked me through what I needed, what the week might look like, what to pack, and what not to worry about too much. As someone who had never sailed before, that was genuinely useful. The booking side was straightforward as well, and whenever I had a question I got a proper answer rather than the usual vague “it’ll be fine” response. Although, to be fair, it mostly was fine.

    A properly wild week afloat

not a manufactured thrill, just real seamanship, right there. The instructors guided us through the whole thing — calm, clear, a bit amused even — and then let us have a go, which was brilliant. That single episode sums up the trip: practical, a touch unpredictable, hugely educational and oddly fun. We’d booked the ASA catamaran course with a small, very experienced crew and they mixed proper training with proper holiday time. Days were a blur of sailing practice, route planning, reef navigation and learning to handle two engines without panicking, and the evenings were for snorkelling, local food and lazy chats under the stars. Highlights? Swimming with rays and a couple of sharks in the shallows, biking round a tiny island with barely any cars, and being ferried ashore in the big cat to an unexpectedly swanky restaurant one night. The tutors — James and Kirill — were patient but pushed us when it mattered: plotting without GPS, fixing a fouled anchor, handing the helm in tricky gusts. I’ll admit it wasn’t all flawless: the berths are cosy, early starts are common and once we had to improvise when a mooring line decided to be awkward, but none of that felt like a deal-breaker, more like part of the story. If there’s one tiny gripe it’s that the onboard kitchen can be a bit hit-or-miss depending on who’s on galley duty, but we ate well overall and the local meals we shared ashore were top notch. My wife and I left feeling far more confident than when we arrived — I’ve done a few charters before, but this course actually made me want to plan a longer cruise. Advice to others: don’t come expecting everything wrapped up in a neat package, come ready to learn, get wet, and roll with whatever the sea throws at you. You’ll practise real skills, see stunning scenery and meet people who love sailing as much as you do.
