the house looked tired, neglected and not properly cleaned.
The barbecue fire changed the whole stay
By the second evening, we were carrying a fire extinguisher around in our heads rather than relaxing on holiday, which is not really how a family break is meant to feel. We booked this villa because we needed somewhere spacious for everyone to stay together, with a pool, games room and kitchen so we could avoid constantly going out. After a fairly stressful few months, we were honestly looking forward to doing very little apart from swimming, cooking and spending time together. Instead, it felt like there was a new issue to chase up almost every day. The biggest and most worrying problem was the barbecue. We had paid extra to rent a grill for the full stay, and there were already two grills at the property when we arrived. One of them caught fire almost immediately after being lit. The gas tank area went up in flames because, according to the maintenance men who came out, there appeared to be a leak in the line. Thankfully we reacted quickly and used the extinguisher before it became much worse. I still feel quite shaken thinking about it, to be honest. We reported it straight away, but were then told the grill might not even belong to Top Villas. That was difficult to accept, because it was sitting at the house we had rented and was clearly part of what we had been given access to. Whether it belonged to them or another supplier, it should have been checked properly before guests arrived. The website talks about professional cleaning and inspections, but that just did not match what we found. The oven door was badly broken, not just slightly cracked, so we could not use the oven. The Wi-Fi worked now and then but kept dropping out, despite being advertised as available. All five TVs had problems of some kind, and the remotes were missing their backs, which made the games room especially frustrating. The light in that room did not work either and took four days to be fixed, meaning the Xbox area was basically unusable for most of our stay. There were other smaller things too, but they added up. The pool was dirty when we arrived and never really felt inviting. A toilet roll holder was hanging out of the wall and came loose every time someone used it. These are not huge disasters individually, I get that, but when you are paying for a holiday home, you should not be spending your time documenting faults, sending messages and waiting for repairs. Maintenance did attend, so I will say they did send people out, but the overall handling from customer service was disappointing. We contacted them several times and asked for a fair partial refund, not some unrealistic full reimbursement. The offer of just over $200 or $250 did not reflect the disruption, the safety issue or the amount of the stay that was affected. What made it worse was being asked to sign something saying we would not leave negative reviews or mention the experience on social media. That did not sit right with us at all. Reviews are supposed to help other families know what they may be walking into. We had photos, videos and screenshots of the Wi-Fi problems and damage, and we shared what we could. This was our first experience with Top Villas and, unfortunately, it will be our last. A holiday should not feel like a list of maintenance tickets.
A holiday ruled by the boiler
the games room was a bit of a lottery, with machines repeatedly failing; one bedroom console only had one controller; the downstairs bedroom fan and air conditioning never worked; and the outdoor Bluetooth could not be sorted. What made it especially tiring was the sheer amount of chasing. Emails, calls, waiting around for engineers – it felt like a part-time job. We were twice told a move to another villa was being considered, but nothing ever came of it. I’m grateful some issues were dealt with, honestly, but the basics, especially hot water and safety, should never have been this difficult.
