We were standing in freezing drizzle on the terrace watching one of the new heaters blink out — a proper gut punch. Delivery itself was fine, showed up when they said and the boxes were intact, so can't fault that. But the after-sales was a different story. Bought two Shadow 3kW units; one arrived faulty (they repaired it), then the other died after about two years. Heat Outdoors sent a replacement motherboard but our sparkie refused to fit it — wiring inside was a mess, cables exposed and routed oddly, looked unsafe, so we sent it back. The other unit had a dead bulb; sounds tiny, but swapping it was almost impossible without risking a short because of the sloppy internal layout. Both heaters had to come down in December — our busiest month — and that hit takings quite a lot. Customer service quoted £399.58 for repairs and came across as resigned rather than helpful; the manager even admitted the units are cheaply made in China. I've had better experiences with other suppliers who make simple fixes straightforward or send someone out, so this felt like being nickel-and-dimed. Friendly-ish tone from staff but overall disappointed — I'd pay more elsewhere to avoid the hassle.
The day the heater finally earned its keep
two were dumped on the doorstep one afternoon, and the big box with the heater turned up a day or so later. My brother, bless him, chucked it in the shed for safekeeping because he saw it by the bin; I only found out later. Typical me, not watching the tracking properly. Anyhow, once unboxed it was clear something was up — only one of the heating bars actually warmed up. Bit embarrassing, because I had imagined cosy evenings and family hangs, and instead we had a very tepid lump of metal. I told the company straight away and, because I’m partially disabled and don’t have the best eyesight, I couldn’t be doing with tiny screws and fiddly bits they suggested I “manually fix”. No, thank you. That wasn’t on my to-do list. I couldn’t prise the front open without risking breaking it.
They agreed to collect and repair it, which sounded promising. They did collect, but when it came back there was no stand and it still didn’t work properly. That was the low point — I’d waited in for a collection that didn’t happen, been promised a pre-12:30 replacement as a goodwill gesture (because we had family over for Christmas), and then been told the driver left it outside my door when I wasn’t there. The worst bit was an email implying I’d fabricated footage from my doorbell. That stung. I had the footage, and their message felt accusatory, which was not the way to make a grumpy customer happier.
So yeah, there were a few phone calls, a trip to the police to report a missing parcel, and a lot of back-and-forth emails. It dragged on longer than it should have. But here’s the twist — when the replacement finally turned up (different courier, different day), it actually worked. Properly. We ended up hauling it into the garden one chilly evening, switched it on, and it warmed the patio in a way the original never did. There was this small, ridiculous moment where my nephew announced it “felt like a summer” and everyone laughed; that’s when I realised I was actually satisfied. Not because everything had gone smoothly (it hadn’t), but because after the slog the product did what it was supposed to and everyone used it.
I’m not saying the whole process was slick — I’d give points to the product for finally doing its job, and to the staff who eventually sorted the replacement out. But I’d also remind anyone thinking of buying to keep an eye on deliveries, insist on signed-for drops if you can, and don’t be shy about asking for photo evidence at the point of delivery. The surprising bit was how a working heater suddenly made the whole Christmas weekend feel better, even after all the hassle. So, mixed feelings: shaky delivery and some dodgy communication, but a decent end result that meant warmer evenings and a family full of slightly smug faces.
