So, while it wasn’t perfect at first, the way it was handled — especially that one helpful person on the phone and the speedy collection — changed my mind. I’d order again, a bit cautiously, but happy this time.
Festive at a glance, dodgy up close
hmm, that looks alright from a distance. Then I started handling it and the mood changed. The box itself arrived taped on with what looked like a single, tired strip of tape — bits of the stag were even poking through the cardboard. When I pulled everything out the items just rattled around, there was no proper internal protection and the little envelope of fixings had come loose and was flapping about. So already it felt like someone had shoved it in a box and hoped for the best.
The materials don’t feel like rattan at all; it’s a coated wire structure and that coating is scratched in places. One of the antler joins appeared to have been bodged back together — weld marks, stripped wire, you can see where it’s been repaired. That wasn’t what I expected when the product name suggests a rattan finish. The tail should light up like the photos but most of the LEDs were dead so half the tail stayed dark. There are also tiny rusty patches here and there, which either suggests poor storage or that this was used before and returned. It definitely didn’t feel brand new.
Assembly instructions were basically non-existent — just a leaflet telling you how to plug it in, nothing about how to assemble or secure parts. So putting it together was fiddly and I had to guess where screws went. The whole thing feels cheaper than the price tag implies, and it gives the impression of being a little patched up rather than fresh out of the factory.
I put it outside on a damp evening and the exposed wiring and rough joins made me uneasy about leaving it out in winter weather. Emotionally, it’s frustrating — you buy something for the kids and the novelty vanishes when half the lights don’t work and bits look like they’ve been welded back on. She said I could get some money back and keep the slightly damaged lantern, or get a brand new pair for free. I decided to go for the new pair and was amazed at how fast they arrived.
