I’d clearly written in the house notes not to use anything wet on the wood and there was a steam cleaner in the cupboard labelled ‘do not use’. The cleaner used it anyway and a couple of boards are now swollen. I felt that sinking, annoying kind of stress — not just the damage but the time you then spend sorting it. To be fair, Kindred replied quickly and said to file a claim if I could prove it, which was unexpectedly prompt, but that doesn’t take away the hassle. Lesson learned: document everything before guests arrive, especially delicate surfaces. If you’ve got specific care instructions that matter, I’d consider arranging your own cleaner rather than relying on theirs. It worked well once, but I wouldn’t trust it blindly again.
Sceptical then relieved
sleep, shower, work a bit. So when the sheets were unusable and there was only one towel for two of us, I was pretty cross (and tired). The concierge’s first reply — that clean linen had been sent to the owner and “should” have been left out — sounded like an excuse, and the photos they later sent claiming the flat had been cleaned just didn’t match what we saw. Still, I gave them a call because I actually needed to sleep and get on with the weekend.
The turning point came when someone from the kits team phoned properly, apologised in a way that didn’t feel scripted, and said they’d bring fresh sheets and another towel within the hour. They arrived, the room instantly felt usable, and that little moment — doors opened, clean linen on the bed — is when I went from annoyed to satisfied. It wasn’t perfect; I’d expect better quality control so this doesn’t happen again, and the initial explanation was weak. But the practical fix and the fact they followed through made a difference. I’ll probably use the app again for short trips, just with lower expectations and a backup plan. That moment when you breathe out
tidy, left a bottle and some flowers (which I appreciated more than I expected), all smooth. The third party were fine people, I think, but they had an awful lot of booze delivered and somewhere between the corks and the karaoke the cream lounge carpet picked up a generous red wine badge. Cue instant dread. What I remember most is not the spill itself but the exact second I realised I could relax: when the support team didn’t dodge me. They answered quickly every time, were properly apologetic on behalf of the situation (not fake-sorry), and actually tried cleaning before deciding replacement was best. The cleaners couldn’t shift it, so Kindred agreed to cover the full replacement cost — and it’s not a small room, so not a small bill. We organised the work, sent the invoice, and the money arrived promptly. That transfer was the sigh moment — I knew then I’d host again. Side note: we used our own cleaners, so I can’t really vouch for the platform’s default cleaning crew, though they refunded £195 after each clean, which seems fair for a big place. Also, I’ve had a few hosts on other platforms go quiet on enquiries, which is annoying; here, the concierge kept nudging things along. There are a fair few rental-style places listed (not strictly “lived-in” homes), which I noticed, but it’s easy to spot. Overall, pleasantly surprised — the practical kindness wins you over.
Nearly panicked, but they helped me out
I set off on this whole hosting thing pretty excited — mainly because I didn’t want the faff of finding and organising cleaners myself. The idea that the platform would handle a professional clean before and after each guest was the reason I signed up. So imagine me, jetting off abroad, thinking “sorted”, and then the guest cancels a day before. I’ll be honest, I felt a bit sick for a moment. The cleaner was automatically dropped and at first it looked like I’d be left scrabbling to book someone local from the other side of the world (and paying a ridiculous amount, probably a couple of hundred quid). Not ideal.
