A car that looked fine — until it didn't

the car looked clean and drove reasonably, but I kept thinking “is something being skimmed over?” — and that feeling turned out to be justified.
Within 24 hours the car wouldn’t start. The dealer sent two blokes who looked unprepared, no proper tools, asking us if we had anything spare. They managed to bump-start it and said it could be a dozen things but “they couldn’t be sure” without working properly. That alone put me on edge. The car went back to them and then disappeared into their workshop for about six weeks. It still wasn’t fixed when they returned it.
They hadn’t done the MOT or service they’d guaranteed, and the warranty they tried to sell was heavily marked up — you can get similar cover elsewhere for a lot less. When we refused to accept the car back in that state we asked for a full refund under the consumer credit rules. That was refused, so we got solicitors involved. They even relisted the vehicle for sale while the refund dispute was unresolved, which seemed legally dubious and it was eventually taken down by the marketplace for suspicious activity.
I’m not saying every dealer is like this, but this experience has left me wary. The situation is still being sorted legally; the solicitor thinks we’ll get the money back, so there’s a sliver of hope. The car itself had real mechanical and electrical faults that six weeks couldn’t fix — not ideal. In short: trust your instincts, check paperwork thoroughly, and don’t be rushed into add-ons.
