By the second night, I knew something wasn’t right because the cabin felt oddly close and warm, even with the temperature turned down. I was in Caribe 228 on deck 10, and the lack of proper airflow became the one thing I couldn’t really ignore during the whole ten-day Vietnam cruise. It is a shame, because in so many other ways Diamond Princess still feels like a lovely ship to me. She is older, yes, but she has character. The public areas are comfortable, the crew seem to know what they are doing, and there is a nice, settled atmosphere onboard that I’ve always enjoyed. My first impression when I boarded was actually very positive. Everything looked clean, organised and familiar, and I was genuinely pleased to be back. I’d sailed on Diamond Princess not long before this trip, so it felt a little like returning somewhere I already knew.
A holiday that left us questioning everything
$665 for four devices over ten days is wildly overpriced in 2026. It’s difficult not to compare that with free Wi-Fi being available in cafés, hotels and public places almost everywhere now. There were decent bits to the cruise, and not every member of staff was unhelpful, but the overall feeling was that the care and attention had slipped badly. We saved and planned for this holiday, as many families do, and expected better support when things went wrong. After three Princess cruises, I don’t think we’ll book with Princess or Carnival again.
Over the top silence from the company
I pick up the thread somewhere in the middle of the mess — phone propped between shoulder and ear, boarding passes on the table, and my head full of that dull, draining worry you carry when you’ve booked travel for something important. I was meant to be on the ship because I’d arranged the trip around my mum’s operation; it wasn’t a holiday in the usual sense, it was something that mattered. Flights got cancelled because of airspace problems in the Caribbean (real emergency situation), so we couldn’t get there. That’s fair — storms and restricted airspace happen — but what I didn’t expect was the way the company handled, or rather didn’t handle, the fallout.
