Nice spot, rubbish tech

    Unexpectedly handy storage

I first noticed the place when I drove past on the way to the Saturday market and a mate said “give them a go”. I was sceptical at first. Security, opening hours, price — all questions buzzing in my head. Booking was dead easy though, online and quick. The team were oddly cheerful for a storage firm, and that put me at ease. They even took a box off me while I fumbled with the keys, small thing but nice. The unit is dry and surprisingly clean. Hours are flexible, which matters more than you’d think if you’re running late. My doubts faded after the first week. Still not thrilled about the monthly fee, but overall it’s been a proper help.

Little life-saver for a chaotic move

they’re not taking a risk on your choices of padlock. Sensible, if a bit annoying.
The building has trolleys everywhere and two covered bays with large shutters so you’re not wrestling furniture in the rain. I used a removal firm and told them to leave the van inside the gates; they were fine with it and even carried stuff right into the unit for me. Small detail but very helpful. There are lots of sizes, from tiny cupboards to huge car-sized garages. I started with a medium unit and, as I sold and recycled things, I swapped down to a smaller, cheaper one without any drama. Billy in customer services sorted the downgrade and the notice was simple. No drawn-out admin.
A few tiny gripes: you do have to pay up-front for the first couple of months to get the discount, which felt a bit old-school. And the lighting in the unit is fine, but I still found myself using a torch now and then — maybe that’s just me being picky. They sell boxes and tape on-site which saved me a run to the shops. The whole place smells of good organisation: codes, barriers, a lift that works, piped radio if you like that sort of thing.
All in all I was relieved it was so painless. Mildly critical where I’ve noted it, but honestly grateful — it made a stressful move much less stupidly complicated.

    Nice spot, rubbish tech

dial your unit number and code, no fob, and whenever there’s a thunderstorm the keypads like to have a nap. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve tripped up the shutter or the exit gate and had to reverse out the drive because nothing was responding. Safe to say it’s a lovely way to kill time when you’ve got a job to finish.
The alarm goes off quite a bit too — I’ve seen it more than once — but I’ve never once seen anyone turn up on site. Help points exist, sure, but you press the button and get some remote security bloke who hasn’t got a clue where you are and can’t do anything. Once I reported a roller shutter stuck open and the site was insecure; they took the message and that was it. There’s no manned 24‑hour number, so if their system locks you out or crashes, you’re pretty much stuck until opening time. Frustrating isn’t the word.
Eventually I moved everything to a different place about half an hour away and I’m low-key grateful I did. The new place has a proper 24‑hour manned emergency line that actually answers, direct debit, CCTV that actually covers corridors and entrances, and a free business centre which is surprisingly handy when I need to print a quote or plug in and charge stuff. Rentals are cheaper too, which is nice. So if you love the Welwyn location and don’t mind occasionally being locked out or paying more for it, go for it. For me, though, the delivery/access and customer service were the dealbreakers — glad I found something better.

    Still usable, but constantly annoying

usable, just painfully annoying. I've had a unit here for a few years and at first it seemed fine. I started using it three winters ago when I needed extra space for bikes and boxes, and first impressions were cheerful enough — clean corridors, easy booking. Lately though things have slid. Access gets blocked for long spells, so you turn up and wait, or go home annoyed. Staff often park in customer bays. I've had a couple of awkward phone calls where the person sounded like they didn't want to talk to me. The place needs a bit of love. We had leaks over winter and a few bits of cardboard got soggy, and some doors are stiff and tricky. That said, the site is secure and the price isn't terrible, so it's not all doom. It just feels neglected at times. If you're storing sentimental heirlooms, think twice. For overflow stuff it's OK, but expect hiccups now and then.
