Claim merry-go-round
Don't expect reliable support if you claim gadget cover bought via MoneySuperMarket. The policy looked fine for my holiday kit, but when I needed gadget cover it turned into a circus. Bought AXA/Coverwise travel cover through the MoneySuperMarket app; that was surprisingly quick and the price reasonable. When I raised a claim I was bounced between Davies Group and Coverwise for over a month, emails back and forth — each saying the other handled gadget claims for policies from the comparison site. In the end my claim stalled and nobody took responsibility. Good for buying, poor for claiming.
Small claim, big hassle
I bought this after a bit of digging on Trustpilot and already had my doubts about how claims would be handled. Those doubts didn’t disappear. I had to make a claim after catching a sickness bug on the way to the airport at about 3am and missing my flight. I didn’t go to A&E or a GP at that hour for obvious reasons, so I couldn’t produce a doctor’s note and they rejected the £200 claim. The call centre, based in the US, were polite but stuck to a script and seemed unable to deal with anything that didn’t fit their checklist — I ended up repeating myself a lot. Oddly, they were very sympathetic in tone, which was surprising given how firm the refusal was. First impressions of the policy looked fine on paper, but the claims process was rigid and frustrating in practice. Not catastrophic, but a proper waste of time and stress. I’d look elsewhere next time.
Unexpectedly relieved
the claims team sounded human, asked sensible questions and didn’t make me feel judged. They asked for a doctor’s note, which I sent, and most of it was sorted within a couple of weeks. Not worth the bargain

Won't use them again and I'd warn others to check the tiny print properly, and maybe don't trust a cheap tag on its own.
Phone chaos on a small claim
The phone kept crackling while I tried to explain a tiny claim. I was on hold for ages and had to sit through a string of unrelated recorded messages, then that thin repetitive music that gets under your skin. When someone finally answered the line there was constant electrical interference. Voices in the background — laughing, shouting — so loud they nearly drowned out the adviser. The call kept dropping and coming back. It made simple questions take ages. The person I spoke to stuck rigidly to a script. They read from a sheet and rarely explained things in plain terms. I can’t imagine someone in a vulnerable spot getting anything but extra stress.
Nearly sorted, then stuck
forms, receipts, confirmation letter saying payout in ten days. Then I fumbled a digit when typing our sort code. Ten days passed, no money, so I phoned. They found the mismatch (obvious typo) but from there things slowed and then stopped. Rather than reissue the payment, I was told to 'contact my bank' — which I did, repeatedly, while Coverwise pushed it back (lots of calls, lots of waiting). Now they say there's nothing further they can do. So: good at first, helpful early on, but the final mile failed. I'm lodging a complaint with the Financial Ombudsman Service. Not a total disaster, but not reassuring.
Claim denied, case still broken
Not fit for purpose, so I'm cancelling renewal. The suitcase had a wheel ripped off and cracks in the base. I reported it to the airline and to AXA and sent the documents and photos they asked for. The bag is 25kg and won't stand up. I pointed out the risk of the cracks widening and everything spilling out while travelling. They refused the claim twice. Their explanation was that the policy only covers suitcases that are entirely unusable after a single incident. They decided this didn't meet that bar. So I'm meant to go home to London with a damaged case. It's inconvenient and stressful. I wasn't asking for much — a contribution towards a replacement — but they wouldn't budge. Oddly, their front-end is quick and the premiums are cheap, which makes the refusal more surprising. If you rely on a policy to actually help when stuff breaks, read the small print about "single incident" total loss. Take extra photos and keep receipts, just in case. I won't renew. Others might have a different outcome, but for me it was unreliable and unhelpful.
Broken promises, decent nurses
I was halfway through my holiday when I ended up in hospital — proper mess. I came across this insurer on my travel agent’s website before I left, so I thought I was covered. In practice I couldn’t get anyone on their emergency number, so I had to pay for a scan and even an operation myself. My sister back home eventually spoke to someone and passed a different number to me, which helped a bit, so I’m grateful for that at least and for the hospital staff who were brilliant, honestly. After discharge they found another urgent issue and I needed to get home fast. An agent told me to get a fit-to-fly certificate and book my own flight because that would be quicker than waiting for them — fair enough, but that left me about £4,000 out of pocket. Since then it’s been a loop of “send the receipts” — I’ve emailed the same paperwork three times and they still ask for it. I asked to speak to whoever’s handling my claim and was told it couldn’t be arranged, which is infuriating. No one from the company has proactively called me, apart from messages relayed through the hospital at odd hours saying the hospital expects me to settle the bill and claim it back; that’s unrealistic for a pensioner. Overall, the medical care was good and I’m grateful for that, but the insurer’s communication and handling have been shambolic.
