    Staying put (for now)

I'm keeping the accounts — surprisingly pleased. I opened a couple of savings pots and an ISA and moved a decent chunk over (round about £15k) and although the first couple of weeks were fiddly, overall it feels worth it. Right away the app went a bit wonky and the chat option they prefer was out of action, which was annoying because you expect the digital bits to work these days. Phone support, which is overseas, wasn’t brilliant at first either — a few long waits and the same scripted fraud message I’ve had to sit through more than once. That said, every time I raised it further someone did actually sort things out, and I never felt the money was at risk, which mattered most to me.

Early-morning panic turned into a win (eventually)

it’s six in the morning, I’ve filled the car (cost me £65 — oof), I’m at the forecourt and my card just won’t go through. No warning, no text, nothing. I’m a 45-year-old parent, working full time, so I’m already running on autopilot and trying not to be late. The card suspension at that moment was the one thing I didn’t need. I sat there for about 45 minutes feeling proper stuck, panicking a bit, until someone I knew came by and lent me cash — bless them. I got to work hungry and a bit rattled; imagine trying to focus when you’ve not eaten and you’re thinking about missed wages.

    When it finally clicked

Sat at my kitchen table, scrolling through my banking app, I half-expected another clunky message. I'd only switched a couple of months ago and first impressions were... mixed — interface a bit fidgety, emails a tad formal. Then I got a follow-up that actually made sense, clear steps and helpful options. That was the moment I relaxed; felt like someone was listening. Started using it daily since and it's grown on me. Still room to tidy things up, but actually quite pleased overall.

    Smooth switch, after a wobble

It started off a bit messy. After about twenty years with Barclays I closed my small company in 2022 and found the business account had been wound down via Companies House without me being told, so transactions just stopped — not ideal, that caused a few awkward days while things cleared up. I booked an appointment at the local branch and was seen by Rose. She worked through everything calmly, checked my ID, checked pending payments, and suggested the most sensible personal account for how I actually use my banking — regular payroll from a council, a fair bit of transfers, the usual bills. She set the account up there and then, did it properly, and the online access and cards started behaving as expected. I still had to chase one or two small items afterwards, but it felt competent and thorough rather than flashy. Feels reliable now for daily use and payroll stuff, and that’s what matters. Short irritation about the earlier closure, but the service I got at the desk fixed it.
