I nearly didn’t bother renewing with GEM, mainly because roadside cover sounds much the same until you need it. Then, last Saturday, a screw in the back tyre put an end to my ride home. It wasn’t a dramatic breakdown, thankfully; I’d managed to stop in a retail park, so I wasn’t stranded on a hard shoulder.
Breakdown cover that actually turned up
My car gave up on the way home, which was particularly unhelpful as I’d already had a fairly grim recovery experience with another provider last year. Reporting it through the GEM app was straightforward, no messing about with long phone menus. I expected a wait, to be honest, but the patrol arrived in roughly 20 minutes. That alone was a relief. He spent a decent amount of time trying to get the car going at the roadside rather than immediately deciding it needed towing. It couldn’t be fixed there in the end, but he explained what he was doing and arranged recovery back to my house without making it a drama. GEM also checked in while I was waiting, which sounds minor but it made a difference. With my previous provider, I spent hours chasing updates and got nowhere. GEM costs a bit more, yes, but after this I can see where the money goes. Glad it turned out better than expected.
