the recovery driver left the paperwork, we sent it over and GEM refunded us quite quickly. Last time was a different story. No documents came from the driver, and the recovery firm never supplied an invoice despite several chasers. GEM said they couldn’t really get involved, which left us paying the bill ourselves. That’s the frustrating bit, because the recovery company was arranged through them in the first place. Other than this, our past dealings have been decent, so I’m not writing them off. Still, the system feels unfinished now, and customers shouldn’t have to keep chasing paperwork to claim money back.
When the bike gave up
Halfway through a sunny afternoon, the bike simply decided it had had enough. I use it for everyday journeys, so I was unsure about relying on GEM, because breakdown cover always sounds better on paper than it feels when you are stuck somewhere. The engine had fuel, a spark and air, yet it would not fire, so there was no fixing it roadside. I called them, explained where I was and what had happened, and the process was calmer than expected. Updates came through without me having to chase anyone. Hough Green Garage from Widnes reached me within the half-hour estimate, handled the motorcycle carefully and took me and the bike home, as requested. The unexpected bit was how straightforward everyone was. No fuss, no vague promises. Shame about the bike, obviously, but the cover did exactly what I needed.
Not-perfect-timing-but-proper-bike-help
I nearly didn’t bother renewing with GEM, mainly because roadside cover sounds much the same until you need it. Then, last Saturday, a screw in the back tyre put an end to my ride home. It wasn’t a dramatic breakdown, thankfully; I’d managed to stop in a retail park, so I wasn’t stranded on a hard shoulder.
Breakdown cover that actually turned up
My car gave up on the way home, which was particularly unhelpful as I’d already had a fairly grim recovery experience with another provider last year. Reporting it through the GEM app was straightforward, no messing about with long phone menus. I expected a wait, to be honest, but the patrol arrived in roughly 20 minutes. That alone was a relief. He spent a decent amount of time trying to get the car going at the roadside rather than immediately deciding it needed towing. It couldn’t be fixed there in the end, but he explained what he was doing and arranged recovery back to my house without making it a drama. GEM also checked in while I was waiting, which sounds minor but it made a difference. With my previous provider, I spent hours chasing updates and got nowhere. GEM costs a bit more, yes, but after this I can see where the money goes. Glad it turned out better than expected.
