I booked a French holiday weeks ago and thought the deposit had gone through. The site said it had. My bank said it hadn’t. I raised it with them and got a handful of messages promising to look into it. Nothing really came back. So I rang the property owner directly — and honestly, they were the only ones making any progress. The owner has been chasing HomeToGo while I sit and wait. Feels like I'm in the middle of two separate companies arguing. Online agents gave me different stories on how the payment failed and what to do next. In the end they told me to sort it with the owner. Fine, I’m happy to do that, but if that’s the case I asked to cancel without extra fees because they didn’t do what they said they would. It hasn’t been resolved yet. Delivery of confirmation was patchy; customer service was worse. I’ve had worse with other sites, and I’ve had better too. Slightly relieved the owner is proactive — otherwise this could have been a complete disaster. Fingers crossed it finishes cleanly. For now I wouldn’t recommend relying on their handling of payments.
Bit of a faff with the paperwork
contracts seem flexible once money's been taken, and customer support can be unhelpful. Not ideal, but workable if you’re careful.
Not what we signed up for
no proper knives for the bread, the BBQ was unusable, and the pool had a ring of green algae along the top. Squirrels had chewed cushions so the sunbeds were a joke, and then two mice ran across the lounge one evening. We gave up after three nights and found other digs. I did try to sort it with the rental company and the owners, sent detailed emails, but they basically denied everything and refused any refund, which was frustrating. On the odd plus, the garden had a lovely view at sunrise — small consolation. Overall, my doubts before booking were warranted and, sadly, confirmed.
Mid-packing regret
pay half now, pay the rest later, and free cancellation up to a certain date. That sounded fair, and I wasn’t keen on tying up the full amount months in advance, so I went ahead, a bit nervous but thinking “okay, that’s normal”.
Missing aircon, found a compromise
a portable unit put in the house, a similar place that actually has aircon, or meaningful compensation if neither was possible. They said they needed to talk to the property manager. Predictable, and I braced for the usual delays.
What surprised me was the way the customer reps dealt with it. Polite, available, and they kept coming back with updates. Not lightning fast, but consistent. In the end they arranged a temporary solution — a portable unit delivered before we left. It isn’t perfect. Portable units aren’t as good as built-in systems. But it did what it needed to do for the dog. So my initial doubts were mostly eased.
I’m giving credit where it’s due. The mistake shouldn’t have happened. The listing should be checked more carefully. But when things went wrong they didn’t ignore me, and they did follow through. Small relief, but relief nonetheless.
