Lookout cottage Newton by the sea

As a National trust member, and having stayed in National trust properties before, in fact we got married in Hanbury Hall, we had expected better, even for a 2 grade property. We knew it wasn’t a luxury cottage, but this place really came below par on standards. Firstly, we arrived to find the gate we were supposed to use to access the property, and park our car, in the designated space (this doesn’t actually exist just to point out) it’s just a field with nothing to suggest any parking space! Was full and completely blocked by a large herd of highland cattle, admittedly they did not seem too agitated by us (I previously worked on a dairy farm so knew how to behave around cows, but also knew they can be very unpredictable especially as we had 2 dogs with us) we live in the Cotswolds so our dogs are utterly unfazed and uninterested in livestock. The option of parking the car in the none existent space was there for not an option. So we had to park, and pay for the carpark a short way down the road, and then carry all out luggage, food, dog beds etc, through a rather intimidating herd of cows uphill to the cottage, it took us 3 trips, of unlocking the gate, locking the car, trying to navigate through the cows and I fairly steep walk, not a problem if your not carrying heavy bags! It says in the information for the cottage that in decent weather you can drive up to the cottage to unload! This is almost amusing. You would not firstly be able to open the gate with 20 plus large cows in front of it without risking any escaping, and the gradient is far too steep and ground clearance to challenging for anything other than a 4 wheel drive vehicle, this would have been helpful information! As for leaving your car in the bottom of the field during your stay! Well only if you don’t mind cows using it as a rub point, and are ok with dents and door mirrors being broken off. After than stressful fiasco we then have a look around the cottage, perhaps we think, it will be all worth it! It was ok, in the sense that it was cosy, fairly comfortable bed and sofa, but seriously tatty, other National trust property reviews talk about them looking like they were furnished from a charity shop, that’s exactly what this felt like. Pans in the cupboards were not very clean, paint was flaking in all rooms, the room heaters worked but are definitely in need of replacement. The view is what we came for, and it is beautiful, but with old single glazed windows, it’s not easy to see through the almost constant condensation. We didn’t mind having an outside loo, it was warm, but again, so so tatty, all the paint faking off. In a nutshell, we felt, although it wasn’t an expensive break, however £400 for 3 nights midweek, out of season, it was disappointing and we both won’t be returning and will look more closely at National Trust properties before booking in future.
Also, the information I received before arriving stated the designated parking space and track to the cottage were undergoing maintenance, they really aren’t.

    Cottage holiday stay

Coming out of lockdown we booked a stay at Little Milford Farmhouse in Pembrokeshire. We arrived to find the cottage to be in a terrible state of repair. The cottage was damp and cold with rotten woodwork. The property was dirty with lots of black mold and the outdoor furniture was severely burnt by a careless barbecue user. There were also numerous deviations from the advertised specifications. We have had a small refund on our £800 stay but have been continuously ignored by customer services. Please ask for an assurance of a full refund before you book. The national trust don’t seem show reviews for each property, so please be careful before booking. Sadly you can no longer trust the national trust.

    MOTORHOME BOOKING AT KINGSTON LACY

The booking procedure was efficient and I received several emails notifying me of the restrictions on number of households etc. All very efficient. We were booked to arrive in 5 days from now.
However, I found out today from someone trying to book at the same site that it is in fact closed and will be until 17 May.
Is it too much to expect to be notified? The booking was paid for in full when I booked in January which I believe forms a contract.
The person on the phone today was barely apologetic- I asked for a refund, just glad that I found out before driving the 100 miles...

    Souter Lighthouse cottage stay

setting of lighthouse is beautiful but if you expect a high level of finishing for your stay then beware , you could stay at far higher standards of accommodation for less. Mist furniture was so out of place it looked like the kind of stuff a charity shop would have difficulty selling.

The worst part was getting an admission from local staff that their had been complaints about the standards , only for NT head office to later deny there was any previous complaints.

Of course I’ll stay at other NT propertIes again (but definitely not this one ) and I’ll continue to support the organisation but this experience and terrible Customer Service attitude means I am compelled let others know . Good luck, choose your cottage well, and I just hope you don’t need to complain
