Mid-move with bad back — delivery quick, customer service helpful, minor hiccup.
Nearly convinced
Needed for a move; sceptical at first, then quick quote, pleasantly surprised though.
Saved my evening
Halfway through setting it up I cursed the awkward controls; Susie calmly fixed things, it felt sorted and easy.
A bit of a find
Was a bit sceptical before buying, now use it daily for work — pleasantly surprised.
Mate's Insta tip
Saw it on a mate's Insta and tipped my sister; delivery was ace, service helpful — insurance extension info was murky.
Handy for students
Really handy — spotted it on a mate's Insta, booked quick, clear prices, easy to use, ideal for students
Nicky, proper lifesaver
Honestly, best call — Nicky sorted it within hours and lifted a weight off me. Spotted them via a mate; I’ve told Sarah.
Really helpful team
Really pleased — the two women I spoke to made choosing cover for the year on the 417 visa easy; seemed honest, no fuss, thanks.
Tiny mistake, big relief
Half-asleep I messed up my details and almost cancelled — phoned them, they fixed it straight away, so my doubts totally vanished, really.
Properly sorted
Quick delivery and Anca on support was lovely — sorted on the phone in a couple of minutes. Saved me hassle, thanks
Smooth start, so far
Honestly, I'm impressed so far — took it out quickly and it fits my everyday needs. I use it for commuting and the odd weekend break, and I was surprised how little faff there was with documents. Value seems fair, fingers crossed for claim.
Relief when it mattered
they kept phoning me with updates, not just emails. It's now part of our routine packing checklist — take the policy, keep the app handy.
The long phone call that fixed it
I was halfway through drafting yet another "polite reminder" when, surprise, the phone actually did something — it made them act. The claim for a medical emergency in India was eventually sorted, but getting there was a saga. AXA ignored emails for weeks, then popped up asking for the same document twice, and nothing moved until I rang and properly pushed them. It took almost four months and a few exasperated conversations to see any progress. Honestly, the service felt half-asleep and a bit chaotic. If you're claiming, be prepared to chase, call often and keep records. I wish they'd been quicker, but at least it closed in the end.
Holiday turned into a claims saga
I booked this cover because we were heading to a fairly remote part of South America and, well, you hope you never need it. My husband slipped a disc — first proper back problem he's ever had — and suddenly we were in a basic local hospital unable to walk. Outbacker (underwritten by AXA) took over a week to approve anything, during which he got very little care. They eventually arranged a transfer to a private clinic but that took three days of back-and-forth and misrouted paperwork. They were evasive and slow, frankly. To be fair they did pay us back in the end, but only after six months and several thousand pounds out of pocket. Not confidence-inspiring; useful when it works, but the process was messy.
Still recommending, but with a big caveat
buy the cover, but be ready to chase up the insurer. I sent a claim in May for a nasty head injury — fractured skull, bleed on the brain, plus a parasite. It's now December and AXA haven't replied. The hospital are still owed over $4,000 and I'm out more than £1,000. Outbackers sell the policy, but they couldn't get AXA to respond for us, and there's no cheap way to ring AXA from abroad. I was wary of making long calls because of the cost and being on hold. So yeah, good cover on paper and I was happy they sold it, but prepare for admin and possible delays. Keep records and brace for a wait.
Unsettling but useful lesson
be careful, but there’s a silver lining. It’s a shame, yet I’m glad I dealt with it when I did. My partner and I had two bereavements while away and were told by the insurer we could claim flights home. We returned and put in a claim. Three rejections followed. Answers were vague. One agent even said the original advice might have been wrong, so for a moment we thought it would be sorted. We asked twice for the original phone recording because that call backs up what we were told. That was ignored. Emails asking to escalate to the financial ombudsman were brushed aside. Months passed. There was little real empathy, which stung. They did offer a glimmer of acknowledgement but no follow-through, which felt odd. Honestly, I expected more. My tip: record calls, get things in writing and be prepared to chase. Bit disappointing, but at least I’m better prepared next time.
Stranded in Bali with a dodgy boot
Right, so this is a bit of a saga. I broke my foot in Bali and was told I could either have surgery or wear a boot and rest — I went for the boot because I didn’t fancy an op abroad. I rang my insurer to sort a claim and pretty quickly got told I’d have to fly home for surgery, even though no one from their side had actually looked properly at the x‑rays. That stuck with me — I mean, two NHS doctors back home later said surgery wasn’t needed and wouldn’t be done on the NHS. For the rest of the trip I was half panicking that I’d lost a lot of money and that I’d been given bad info. What was oddly positive, and a bit confusing, was that they offered to cover missed trip costs and even two business class flights because I needed help and to keep my foot elevated. In the end, after months of mixed messages and almost zero contact, they did agree to reimburse me, but getting there was frustrating and slow. If you need clear, reliable medical guidance while abroad, this wasn't it for me. If you’re lucky you might get the money back and some decent flight upgrades, but don’t expect sensible medical advice without a fight. Learned the hard way to double‑check with actual doctors rather than relying solely on the insurer’s initial call.
Small mercy, big hassle
lots of repeated forms (same info, different places), a lot of “please resend” emails and not much in the way of clear instructions. Delivery of documents and updates was slow but, credit where it’s due, eventually something useful arrived — a proper phone call from someone who actually seemed to care and explained the next steps (took a while though). I’m not going to pretend it was slick; it felt clunky and bureaucratic, definitely not the smoothest experience. That said, I’m strangely glad it didn’t get any worse — could have been a total nightmare — and at least one rep made a difference, so thanks for that. If you’re a first-timer, brace yourself, and maybe tell a friend first so they can hold your hand a bit.
Quick customer service
I was really impressed with how great the customer service team at this insurance company was. I didn't have to wait long to talk to someone, and they sorted out all my insurance stuff really quickly.
Insurance policy purchase
I had a great chat with Bradley on the phone when I was getting my insurance sorted. He gave me all the info I needed and even shared some helpful tips from his own travels. His expert advice really made a difference and I appreciate his top-notch customer service.
