Really good network

Very transparant network. Got the data I didn't use back every month, pretty nice as this does not happen at most other networks Read onBy: Paul S.

    Switched, slightly nervous

I was wary switching from O2, honestly, but signal’s better, no contract, decent price — not perfect though, a few hiccups, but mostly sorted.

    Good price, patchy signal

Good value overall, but don’t rely on it for solid calls — lines crack up and I had two whole days offline since signing up. Better than some rivals on price, though.

    That first clear call

I wasn’t sure at first, coverage seemed hit-and-miss around Glasgow, but the moment I made a clear call on the walk home I relaxed — number porting took longer than ideal, but it works daily.

    Ping of relief

As I was about to give up, a ping popped up — my number was back. Shaky start (no login for weeks, like other firms), but support sorted it. Not perfect, took time, yet that’s when I felt relieved.

    Sensible choice for a kid

Overall, it's a good buy — saves me cash, which is what matters. I use it for my son's daily calls to mates; the allowance keeps bills down. Few hiccups with data speed but I'm pleased, and I've told other parents.

    No signal at my desk

Signal was useless at work. Colleagues on other networks had full bars, I had none. Tried customer service. No one answered. Left questions hanging. I ended up cancelling after a few weeks, fairly quickly. Annoying but simple decision, really.

    Switched for the signal

Saw it on a mate's phone last summer and switched straight away. No drops abroad — signal stayed surprisingly strong even on trains. The app is dead simple, though billing could be clearer. Happy it's cheaper, but small hiccups remain.

    Regret the switch

Not worth it — switched here and I’d go back if I could. Mostly nothing loads on my phone, speed tests under 2 Mbps almost always even with full bars. They insist there’s no cap, but I’m doubtful after my previous provider was fine.

    Still sticking around

Stuck with them for almost two years now — was with another miserly provider before, so this feels like an upgrade. Signal’s solid, enough mobile data for faffing about and streaming, and the app’s dead easy. Payments come out same day, which is oddly satisfying. Not flawless, but does the job. Nice value, too most days.

    Solid service but billing worries

Overall, it's a decent and mostly reliable service, but I'm uneasy about billing and those end-of-month dropouts. I've seemed to be charged twice once or twice, and the connection has a habit of going down just before the new month — a bit sus, makes you wonder. Customer support is alright, but I'd want clearer billing and fewer surprise cuts. Keep an eye on your statements, and ask them straight away if something looks off.

    Good value, patchy signal

Putting the SIM into my phone on a damp Tuesday, I was pleasantly surprised by the low monthly price and no long contract. First impressions were good — easy activation — but delivery was slower than I'd hoped and I had to email customer service once. Signal's fine in towns, but out in the countryside it's hit-and-miss compared with EE. Bit of give and take.

Oddly helpful, with a few hassles

I bought this SIM mainly to order seeds for a CBD plant — needed them because of chronic back pain and after a poor experience with another provider I wanted something less faff. Delivery was spot on and arrived quicker than I expected, which was great. Customer service was helpful but very slow, lots of emails and a faff to lift adult filters. Not perfect, but it does the job. I'd use them again, probably.

Referral faff, but it worked in the end

Wasn't expecting to spend half an evening chasing a referral voucher, honestly. I've been using their SIM for months — great for commuting and for calls when I'm working from cafés — so I sent a mate the link. Then the enrolment thing failed and they said we weren't eligible. Had to argue, ring back, repeat myself. Bit annoying, delivery of the voucher was slow, but after pestering they did sort it. Not spotless, but usable.

    Unexpected voucher fuss

Odd start — we signed up via the referral promise and I sent a mate the link. Then the enrolment link "broke" and they suddenly said we weren't eligible. Annoying. I was a bit surprised, to be honest. Delivery of the SIM and kit arrived on time though, which was a relief — not everything was bad. It's the customer service that let it down, kept arguing and no goodwill gesture at all. I've had better treatment elsewhere, but at least the parcel turned up.

    Handy little lifesaver

I stuck the data SIM in my iPad on a whim before a weekend away. First impression was neat packaging and easy instructions, which helped. It worked straight away at home, then I hit a hiccup abroad — or so I thought. After a chat (a real person, thank goodness) they sorted the roaming settings in minutes. That’s the moment I relaxed. Simple, steady connection since, happy I didn’t switch and it just does what it says.

Not perfect, but gets me by

Moved into a new flat and, fed up with my old provider’s patchy signal, I activated a Smarty SIM this week. The setup was easy and the SIM fits my phone neatly, data initially felt snappy, it’s mostly fine, well, most of the time — actually quite pleasant. That said, there have been spells of slow speeds, 4G dropping out and a couple of times my banking app wouldn’t connect, which was annoying. Support said the mast nearby is congested and they’re working on it. So, not flawless, and you do notice the dips, but for day-to-day use and the price I’m genuinely happy; I’d recommend with a caveat.

    Not worth the switch

pages hang, apps won't refresh, nothing loads properly. There's no phone number and the online chat is maddening — follow their steps, you get kicked out, then start again and answer about twenty security questions like it's medieval bureaucracy. I'm annoyed and kinda embarrassed I switched over for £8 a month. Waste of time; won't recommend. Really not worth the faff.

    Quick switch, happy so far

great coverage where I live and across the UK, decent price and the roaming in Europe still works. I chose a SIM-only plan after my old operator closed and Smarty had more data for the money than anyone else I looked at. Setup was fast online. Calls and texts are unlimited, the data is what I picked and it renews monthly so there's no contract headache. Not perfect though; the app can be a bit basic and I miss a clearer bill breakdown. Still, no dramas for me — would recommend a try.

Key points to consider when choosing a telecom provider

There are currently so many companies offering telecom services and so many marketing techniques to catch hold of new customers, which makes it harder to see through the many offers and decide which provider to choose. The most relevant thing to keep in mind is that the provider should be a company that aligns best with your needs. Here are three basic qualities to look for when choosing a service provider:

Network reliability - check that the network is a fully converged one with a consolidated infrastructure that includes IP, Ethernet and optical technologies. Network convergence includes the coexistence of video, voice and data communication. Also, security and stability is a main concern, so always check that the network has all the needed protection to prevent service attacks, that it has the ability to restore their services fast with minimum or no impact to your activity and that the systems are constantly updated to offer the latest technology so it avoids performance issues and won’t stall the growth of your business.

Offers and support -  check what products and services are provided by the company that best suit your needs. Telecom providers should offer a good amount of customization and options for their products and services that adapt to your specific needs. Some of us need more data, some need more voice, some need faster internet, etc. Make sure you are choosing the best option depending on your activity and that these options also don’t come with unnecessary burdens of services and expenses that you aren’t interested in.

Customer support - make sure they have quality customer support. There are so many occasions in which a client doesn’t get offered the best products or the assistance they need just because the company doesn’t consider the importance of keeping their clients happy and helping them when in need. Customer support should be effective, treat you with respect and have communication skills. This is essential to make sure your experience with your provider turns out to be a positive one.

Considering these main points should help you decide the right telecom provider for your home or business. Another great way to help you decide your network provider is to read customer reviews about these companies. Here are some telecom services that you may want to look into:
