the server seemed put out by the simplest requests, asked what we wanted with the pasty like it was a puzzle, and the way she looked when we asked for six sugars was noticeably off. Delivery of the food and drinks themselves was fine, no delays, temperature okay. Overall I’m glad the shopping bit was pleasant and the food was fine, but the customer service at the counter needs work. I wouldn’t write them off completely, but I wouldn’t rush back just for the café side.
Moving-day relief
I was on the floor with boxes everywhere and a sore lower back when I realised I needed this fast. Ordering wasn't perfect — the website struggled with different billing and delivery addresses and I had to re-enter details. No confirmation came straight away, which made me nervy, but after a short back-and-forth by email they asked for a bit of ID and sorted it. Calling just sent me to voicemail, so that was a faff. The good bit? Delivery turned up earlier than expected and the courier was really helpful getting it inside. The item itself does what I needed — eases the ache while I sort the house — though the box had a small dent. They handled a duplicate charge quickly after I chased them. Not flawless, but solid service when it mattered.
Good stock, awkward queue
decent products at good prices, friendly service from the young cashier, but queuing was a pain. There was only one person on the tills. She handled it well though — quick, polite and clearly doing her best. I was surprised she even offered to hold our bits behind the counter while we carried on looking around town. That gesture made a real difference. What spoiled it a bit was an older woman who walked up and told her off for not ringing for help, then marched to another till. You could see the kid deflate for a moment, which was awkward. Still, she smiled and kept going. So, if you want value and don't mind a wait, it's fine. If you're after fast, fuss-free shopping at busy times, maybe not. Worth a visit if you’re in Durham, and I’d recommend it to friends — with a small caveat about the queues.
A dodgy delivery turned into a decent outcome
just him holding the box, a bit of a bin and a step in shot, nothing that actually showed it at our door. So I fired off a complaint, a bit annoyed and expecting radio silence. At first the supplier’s replies were brusque and a bit useless, which didn’t help. After nagging and sending more info, TJ Hughes properly picked it up and, to my surprise, they sorted a refund rather than fobbing me off. It took time, and I’m still not keen on that “left in a safe place” nonsense, but the final outcome was fair. If you want the highlight: persistence pays — clearly flagging the dodgy photo made the difference. Would I use them again? Maybe, cautiously — prices are okay and when pushed they did the right thing, just don’t assume delivery proof is gospel. Lesson learned: keep your emails and photos ready, and be prepared to chase them, but they can be bothered to fix it if needed.
Not worth the stress — next time I’ll buy elsewhere
avoid using their standard courier if you want anything in a hurry, and don’t expect quick, helpful replies by email. Lucky for me the card company sorted the money, but it was a right faff getting there.
Home goods
I recently bought some home goods and had a great experience with the company. They kept me well informed about my order and I got a confirmation quickly. The website was easy to use and I could easily keep track of my order. Even though I ordered over a Bank Holiday weekend, I was surprised at how fast the delivery was - my order arrived early. Everything was packed really well, so everything arrived in perfect condition. The prices were really good, much cheaper than other places - even cheaper than Amazon. Overall, I was really happy with the service I got from the company and I would definitely recommend them to others.
Sofa purchase
I bought a sofa from the shop not long ago and it ended up taking weeks to get to me. I was getting in touch with them loads through email and phone calls, but all they told me was that the sofa was out of stock. When it eventually did arrive, I was happy with how good and comfy it was. But man, the whole delivery process was an absolute nightmare.
Spray bottle purchase
When I first saw the box my order came in, I wasn't too sure about it because it looked a bit beaten up. But when I opened it up, I was relieved to see that the spray bottle inside was perfectly fine. Even though I had my doubts at first, I have to say, it actually works really well and I'm pretty happy with what I bought.

Basketball Hoop
I recently bought a basketball hoop from TJ Hughes and I was so surprised by how good it was. It's really strong and sturdy, perfect for full-size balls, dunks, and even adults playing three-point shots! Putting it together was quite easy, although it was a bit tricky for me because the hoop is quite heavy. Just a heads up, make sure you're careful when lifting it upright before filling the base. It took me 4 bags of sand to fill it up properly. Changing the height is easy and I think the design is really good overall.
Hosepipe
I bought a hosepipe from that shop not long ago, but honestly, I wouldn't suggest it to anyone. It keeps bending and twisting easily, plus it's really poor quality, so I hardly ever used it. I thought about returning it for a refund, but it was quite heavy, so that didn't seem practical. So, I ended up getting a much better hosepipe from a different shop to suit my needs.

I found the online ordering process to be really quick and simple, meaning I could easily browse and buy things without leaving the sofa. It was great to have the choice for the larger items to be delivered, saving me the trouble of lugging them around. When I'm in the store, there's such a good range of products that I can get everything I need all in one go. All in all, I think shopping at this retailer is a breeze and super easy to use.
Comfy jammies
Oh my gosh, I got the most comfortable pyjamas from TJ Hughes! The service was amazing, and the pyjamas are really high quality! They made sure to keep me informed about when my delivery was coming, and it arrived very fast. I will definitely be shopping here again!
Cool stuff
I recently bought some really cool stuff from this store. However, when it arrived, there was a small issue with it. I decided to give the customer services a ring and got through to this guy named Dale. He was really helpful and managed to sort everything out for me. I was genuinely pleased with how they handled the situation!

I've got to say, I was well chuffed with my latest buy. The thing was spot on, just like they said it would be. And I'll tell you what, the delivery was proper quick - one minute it was ordered, the next it was on my doorstep. Can't fault that at all!
